help them get to where they want without burdening them with the information that we understand well but the student may be struggling with. I believe tutors are just the extension of the student and that we should adapt to help them reach their potential. I think I have a knack for explaining notions and terms and am very good at pinpointing what…

Inside MerrimuTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Laila worked on revising the processes and factors affecting photosynthesis and cellular respiration, using summary diagrams to clarify inputs, outputs, and efficiency.

In Year 10, Hannah focused on surds and indices by applying index laws to past test questions and practiced expanding binomial products such as (a+b)^2 and rationalising denominators using conjugates.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Adaa covered multiples, factors, lowest common multiple (LCM), highest common factor (HCF), and used factor trees for prime factorisation during problem-based exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Biology, one student left several exam-style questions blank when unsure, which meant missed opportunities to apply knowledge even if partially correct. This pattern of avoiding answers repeated in earlier lessons on cellular respiration, where hesitation blocked recall and practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 Maths learner often did calculations in her head instead of writing out steps; this made it hard for her to check working or explain reasoning—especially during percentage and long division tasks.

In another session, a Year 9 student's incomplete homework led to gaps in pre-session revision tests and undermined progress on indices and algebra.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Merrimu noticed that a Year 10 student, previously hesitant to speak up, now regularly asks for clarification during sessions and attempts challenging quiz questions even when unsure—last week she improved her quiz score from 8/14 to 12/17 and finished faster than before.

In Year 12 chemistry, Leana began identifying hydrogen environments independently in HNMR problems after initially struggling; she now completes related calculations with less prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student who often skipped words while reading out loud is now sounding out unfamiliar words independently and only occasionally loses her place in longer passages.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Tutoring is going well and Nick and Charlie are a great match! Nick has already made a great connection with Charlie.

Minh aka Truc has been fabulous in the short amount of time I have worked with her. She really has given me the confidence I needed to have a better mindset going in to an exam. From the start she was approachable and understanding. I never felt like I was being judged, she was able to answer all my questions with an explanation on how she got the answer.

Joanna is going really well with her tutoring with Paul and she says he is really good!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lederderg Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bacchus Marsh Primary School.
