As I recently graduated I can understand the pressure that is being faced every day so I would make sure that the student studies a topic with a cool mind rather than studying in a panic mood. I would like them to study everything in a smart way rather studying everything in a hard way. I also believe while studying the student should know what is…

Brush over familiar concepts of study, and go into detail with concepts that are a little more difficult to understand. A tutor should always be patient as the student is already frustrated as they do not understand what they are learning to begin with, and i can say with confidence i am very patient. Most importantly i will boost my student's…

help them get to where they want without burdening them with the information that we understand well but the student may be struggling with. I believe tutors are just the extension of the student and that we should adapt to help them reach their potential. I believe a maths tutor should be able to explain things clearly and stop the flow of teaching when necessary if a student needs to revise a difficult concept, as I believe it is better to know the concepts now rather than leave those areas to remain unclarified and which can and does affect students come a test or exam day. I believe that a tutor…

I consider the most important thing as a maths tutor is to teach your students to ask more questions, more often and trying to answer those questions themselves as if they are the teacher because by doing this they actually get used to thinking about various problems in a better way and come up with well thought questions and a better…

As a maths tutor, I believe the most important trait is to be inspiring to those you are tutoring. Although a tutor can be successful and have the skills required to help their student, they cannot achieve much without inspiring their student. It is easy for students to disengage from tutors who are not inspiring even if they are trying to help…

I think the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is make a safe and open environment. This is highly beneficial as the student engages more in the content as they feel comfortable. Participation and engagement are really beneficial to grasp on key contents covered in the lesson. My strengths as a tutor are great communication,…

Inside MerrimuTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Laila worked on revising the processes and factors affecting photosynthesis and cellular respiration, using summary diagrams to clarify inputs, outputs, and efficiency.

In Year 10, Hannah focused on surds and indices by applying index laws to past test questions and practiced expanding binomial products such as (a+b)^2 and rationalising denominators using conjugates.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Adaa covered multiples, factors, lowest common multiple (LCM), highest common factor (HCF), and used factor trees for prime factorisation during problem-based exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Biology, one student left several exam-style questions blank when unsure, which meant missed opportunities to apply knowledge even if partially correct. This pattern of avoiding answers repeated in earlier lessons on cellular respiration, where hesitation blocked recall and practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 Maths learner often did calculations in her head instead of writing out steps; this made it hard for her to check working or explain reasoning—especially during percentage and long division tasks.

In another session, a Year 9 student's incomplete homework led to gaps in pre-session revision tests and undermined progress on indices and algebra.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Merrimu noticed that a Year 10 student, previously hesitant to speak up, now regularly asks for clarification during sessions and attempts challenging quiz questions even when unsure—last week she improved her quiz score from 8/14 to 12/17 and finished faster than before.

In Year 12 chemistry, Leana began identifying hydrogen environments independently in HNMR problems after initially struggling; she now completes related calculations with less prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student who often skipped words while reading out loud is now sounding out unfamiliar words independently and only occasionally loses her place in longer passages.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Aurelius is fantastic.  Christian and him have hit it off really well and Chris is getting a lot from Aurelius knowledge.  Much appreciated.

Everything going well at the moment, no issues and Michael is an extremely patient and competent tutor. Alex is enjoying the sessions and appears to be moving forward.

So far so good with Amelia - she has always been punctual, professional and friendly and Mila feels comfortable with her.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lederderg Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bacchus Marsh Primary School.
