I think the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student are to make the material understandable and relatable, build their confidence, and create a supportive environment. It's crucial to adapt to their learning style, encourage them, and show them how to tackle problems independently. Ultimately, helping them develop a genuine…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do is to fully understand the needs and wants of a student within their specific subject and in life. By understanding this, tutors can create an environment that will best suit the student, allowing enhanced performance and enjoyment within their subjects. This can be done by simply engaging in normal…

I believe the most important thing a maths tutor can do is help a student feel confident in themselves. Teaching content is part of it, but guiding them to believe they can tackle challenges on their own is even more important. A tutor should make learning feel manageable by breaking things into clear, achievable pieces and giving students tools…

Maintain an improved consistency level with Patience remaining as a constant entity. Always there shouldn't be a race between any to prove who is superior, it should always be concepts inferred through the learning. As a tutor or mentor, I have an amazing skill of Patience of going through the same concept any times with the same smile and…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to create a separate study plan for each one of them based on their learning skills, potential, and the speed at which the student is able to understand the topics. Also, a tutor should more often use real-life examples to simplify relatively hard topics for students to understand them…

A tutor should try to make students understand the core basics of the subject. A tutor should also make the session as simple as possible to ensure that the student creates a genuine interest in the subject. I work very hard to find new innovative and simple methods to explain the basics of the topic to the student. I try to create a core…

I think the biggest thing a maths tutor should not do is view the student from their own perspective, as that can lead to biases and frustration with a student not understanding a certain piece of content. Everything needs to be looked at through a lens, so that the correct procedures can be taken to ensure the student has a favourable experience.…

Inside MitchamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sav explored the key themes and ideas in George Orwell's 1984 and practised structuring analytical essay introductions and body paragraphs.

Year 11 student Manya focused on using sentence starters to build effective analytical paragraphs, as well as analysing symbols within her set text beyond surface meaning.

In VCE Biology, Year 12 student Zoe reviewed core bioethical principles before tackling dihybrid cross questions with worked examples drawn from past exam papers.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student struggled with timed essay writing—she finds it difficult to finish introductions quickly, which meant her full responses were often incomplete during practice.

In VCE Biology, the same student's errors on bioethics MCQs stemmed from insufficient revision and confusion between key definitions, especially when "extra information in questions" was present.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student repeatedly omitted full sentences and overlooked grammatical details in reading tasks; she also mixed up number placement in long division and left times-tables unmastered past 6×9.

During English lessons, messy paragraph structure made it hard for teachers to follow her argument progression.

Recent Achievements

One Mitcham tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 11 student who, after previously skipping questions under time pressure, now works through them methodically—recently answering previously missed exam questions correctly when given more support with timing strategies.

Another high schooler, Sav, moved from struggling to identify what made an essay strong to confidently breaking down sample introductions and structuring her own without much prompting.

For a younger student, Tia initially found combinations and reading comprehension challenging but now shows real independence by tackling tricky maths scenarios step-by-step and consistently finding key answers directly from the text.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nunawading Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John's School.
