Guide them and help them build their confidence as they learn. To a degree, that allows them to then learn on their own and become independent. The best part of being a maths tutor is when you realize your student no longer needs you. It's easy for me to position myself in someone else's shoes. I'm usually very good at identifying what my students…

Really listening to the students' struggles and concerns with an open mindset and responding in an informative yet not condescending manner enables the students to learn and develop their knowledge. I would do this by listening and learning how the student learns and taking the necessary steps to help the student feel comfortable and understanding…

The most important thing a maths tutor could do is to understand the student they are teaching. Not all students are the same and their needs aren't either. So knowing them can help the student grow in their studies. I am currently studying a Bachelors of Education (Secondary) and Bachelors of Science, as such I have both the theoretical knowledge…

The most important things a maths tutor can do for the student is listening to their questions and ensuring every explanation is understood. This ensures that the child not only acquires new knowledge but can apply it to their homework and grow as a student in maths. Also, a tutor must actively grow their methods of teaching, not using one…

I consider the most important role of a maths tutor is to grow students confidence in subjects via encouragement. In order to strengthen students knowledge and abilities, a tutor should ensure that the student believes they can improve their understanding of a subject and trusts that their extra effort does pay off. Hence, by creating an…

Its good to be able to use a formula or understand how mathematical theories work but if you do not understand the fundamental blocks of which that concept is built on you will not be getting very far. Thats why I believe in not only understanding what a formula does but why it works. My ability to find where the problem is in a student and…

Being an inspirational character. A tutor has to encourage his/her students always. During a semester/course, there will be certain times when students will lose interests for a poor mark (may be), or a personal problem. A tutor can't force a student to complete a session because it has to! A friendly approach can be helpful sometimes as well.…

Inside MontmorencyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex focused on linear equations and applied these to worded problems, working through practical examples step-by-step.

For Year 10, Jessica explored the Sine and Cosine Rule by solving triangles in context and revisited key trigonometry concepts using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan tackled logarithmic and exponential equations as well as related geometry questions, emphasizing both algebraic manipulation and interpreting solutions graphically.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student struggled with organizing written work during algebra problems, leading to confusion when isolating variables—he skipped steps in rearranging, which hid sign errors.

In Year 5, a learner avoided showing working in long division due to uncertainty and often left answers incomplete.

For a Year 11 student tackling trigonometry, anxiety about using the correct formula sometimes meant he stuck rigidly to Sine/Cosine rule even when a simpler path was available, causing lost time.

Meanwhile, in Year 10, over-reliance on answer choices rather than interpreting worded questions directly made percentage tasks slower and less accurate.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Montmorency recently noticed some real shifts in students' approaches. In Year 10 maths, Hayden used to get stuck when isolating variables, but after working through the steps together he can now break down equations independently and even spots shortcuts on his own.

A senior student who'd previously rushed through questions is now re-reading each one and using alternative answers as clues—a big change from guessing blindly.

Meanwhile, a primary student has started tackling multiplication by "breaking" numbers apart for easier calculations, showing far more patience than before. Last session, she finished all her sums without skipping a single step.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Eltham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Montmorency Primary School.
