Helping them feel to comfortable to make mistakes, and then to learn from said mistakes. I think that fear of failure is one of the big issues in learning, because if you are scared to try something even if you're unsure, you'll never be able to learn and succeed. I am very personable, and able to meet people where they are at. I am…

I think that a tutor should be able to meet the individual needs of a student and present the content in an easily understandable format for them especially in the field of mathematics where there are often multiple pathways to achieving an answer. I would say a tutors' ultimate goal would be to get in sync with the way the student is taught in their respective schools, colleges or universities. Additionally, it is extremely important to make friends with the students, as this is necessary for proper engagement. I am not afraid to do some research when it comes to getting a student to…

I believe that it is important to help students to understand how academic skills can lead them to their goals, and to encourage them to work hard, doing their best to make the most of opportunities that come to them. It is also important for a tutor to be able to guide a student through failure, and help them to deal with it, if it arises, while…

While assisting with difficult questions can be helpful, empowering students with fundamental knowledge and the confidence to tackle any problem independently enables more effective learning and accelerates their growth. I think a tutor needs to be able to create that working relationship with a student, to show them how fun learning can be. When shown how interesting these things can be, students become much more motivated to engage and learn, and the 1-on-1 support that tutoring provides gives these children the tools they need to excel. I have 18 months of…

I believe that it is important for a tutor to be someone that can be there for a student when they need help emotionally, as well as academically. For many, being there for someone emotionally can be as simple as not knowing about their personal lives and just being there purely to help, while some students, I have found, need to talk about…

First and foremost helping the student to develop logic, as logic is everywhere, and making them understand each problem before solving it. The most important way would be to change the way of learning. Finally, the main part would be to increase their grades, so that they can enroll in world-reputed universities and colleges in the near future…

Inside MontmorencyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex focused on linear equations and applied these to worded problems, working through practical examples step-by-step.

For Year 10, Jessica explored the Sine and Cosine Rule by solving triangles in context and revisited key trigonometry concepts using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan tackled logarithmic and exponential equations as well as related geometry questions, emphasizing both algebraic manipulation and interpreting solutions graphically.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student struggled with organizing written work during algebra problems, leading to confusion when isolating variables—he skipped steps in rearranging, which hid sign errors.

In Year 5, a learner avoided showing working in long division due to uncertainty and often left answers incomplete.

For a Year 11 student tackling trigonometry, anxiety about using the correct formula sometimes meant he stuck rigidly to Sine/Cosine rule even when a simpler path was available, causing lost time.

Meanwhile, in Year 10, over-reliance on answer choices rather than interpreting worded questions directly made percentage tasks slower and less accurate.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Montmorency recently noticed some real shifts in students' approaches. In Year 10 maths, Hayden used to get stuck when isolating variables, but after working through the steps together he can now break down equations independently and even spots shortcuts on his own.

A senior student who'd previously rushed through questions is now re-reading each one and using alternative answers as clues—a big change from guessing blindly.

Meanwhile, a primary student has started tackling multiplication by "breaking" numbers apart for easier calculations, showing far more patience than before. Last session, she finished all her sums without skipping a single step.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Eltham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Montmorency Primary School.
