Listen and understand, as well as not rushing them but still applying pressure to their studies, most students lack confidence within themselves, so inspiring confidence within a student is a huge base step to learning. Engaging, listening, understanding as well as being able to problem solve and find unique ways to explain content in order for…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to develop the student's critical thinking skills so that when they continue to study or whatever they want to achieve in life, they have the skills to keep learning and teaching themselves. A tutor must not only give a student the confidence and encouragement needed to learn properly, but…

Firstly, a tutor has to be able to understand the student's needs and then personalise a learning plan/ style that works for the student - one size does not fit all! Secondly, the tutor needs to guide the student not get them to parrot generic question answers. It's about building the students confidence up, through positive encouragement, and…

Beyond simply helping a student improve their grades, I believe a tutor should aim to further engage their students in their learning and to actively enjoy school. It's one thing to explain to a student how to approach concepts and assessment tasks, but to actively encourage them to love school is something that separates a good tutor from a…

The most important thing any sort of teacher or mentor can do for not just students, but anyone, is to make sure the students believe in themselves and their abilities, for that will take them beyond any test or assignment. The most important thing a tutor - or any teacher - can do is spark a genuine desire to learn, rather than making learning feel like a requirement. When students are encouraged to personally connect with a subject, its quirks and intricacies, they stop seeing learning as a chore and start seeing it as something they truly enjoy. I'm really good at…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to celebrate their successes, big or small. It can be difficult for some students to maintain a love for learning, or even just develop a motivation to study more, so I believe that a tutor is a pillar of support for the student throughout their learning. A tutor can give that…

At a foundational level, it's most important to ensure the student feels confident with the material they're learning. As a first step, it's important for a tutor to assist in honing in and helping the student practice so that their skill level matches the basic requirements of the subject. Then the next most important thing a tutor can do for a…

Carolyn, Moonee Ponds

Inside Moonee PondsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 Chemistry with Thanh in Moonee Ponds has recently focused on interpreting IR spectra and mass spectrometry data, as well as consolidating titration steps and terminology.

For Year 11, Sarah revised galvanic vs electrolytic cells by working through example reactions and discussed the limitations of the electrochemical series.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Alex tackled stoichiometry problems related to combustion reactions and reviewed key experimental design terms like independent/dependent variables, reliability, and systematic errors using practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 Chemistry student repeatedly hesitated to commit answers in worded problems, despite often having the right approach; as one tutor noted, "she's on the right track but doesn't follow through," leading to missed marks for incomplete responses.

In Year 8 Mathematics, confusion arose from inconsistent written layout when breaking down algebraic expressions—working was scattered and hard to follow, which led to lost steps mid-solution.

For a Year 4 student newly learning algebra, fear of making mistakes sometimes resulted in avoidance of writing answers altogether, especially with two-step equations. This left gaps that slowed later revision and feedback.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Moonee Ponds recently noticed some encouraging progress across several year levels.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student who once hesitated with thermochemical equations is now writing them accurately and independently, even tackling combustion calculations that were previously daunting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 maths student has started converting tricky worded problems into simple algebraic expressions on her own, moving past earlier confusion about how to start these questions.

At the primary level, one diligent Year 6 learner breezed through addition and subtraction work this week with barely any mistakes—something she struggled with last term—and double-checked all her answers without prompting.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

All is good Athena really likes Fatemeh, and is enjoying the tutoring. Best regards

Matthew has been extremely happy with the tutoring Hannah has provided, and received an A on his most recent Maths test this week.  Hannah is always very punctual and explains things very clearly to Matthew, and in particular has encouraged him to show his working out, which contributed toward him receiving more marks on his recent test than he would have otherwise received. Matthew has already asked if Hannah can continue to tutor him next year!

Rebecca is extremely happy with Diana.  She is truly amazing and the first session was a great success with understanding and common ground.  Very happy.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sam Merrifeld (Essendon) Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Monica's Primary School.
