I touched on some of these points in my previous answers, but as a tutor I believe the ultimate goal should be to provide one's students with an academic toolbox in the form of an understanding of the fundamental principles of any given topic. By covering first principles, and providing students with problem-solving abilities, he or she can then…

I believe that the greatest affect that a good tutor can do for a student is to infatuate the student into the subject, meaning to truly engage and interest the student in the topic. Once this happens the student will grow a love for the subject, leading them to career paths regarding this subject. This will more importantly grow a work ethic for…

As a tutor, the ability to get a student invested in the topic they are learning and keep it sustained by making the process an organized effort through active conversations and dialogue is vital in any classroom. I believe different methods of…

The most important thing that a tutor can provide for a student is support and motivation. When a student is struggling, they have low self-efficacy and motivation to engage with the subject. From my experience, the most important thing/skill as a tutor is to understand what students are not understanding. I believe that the most effective way to increase academic score/grade is to find the weakness/ topics that we do not quite get. Tutors should find those in students quickly and resolve it by teaching effectively. One of the biggest…

I believe that it is incredibly important for a tutor to inspire their student to achieve their very best in terms of their academics. I believe the most important thing as a tutor is to be positive and encourage students at all times. When I received tutoring in high school the most effective way in which I learnt was to be encouraged to try the question even if I had no idea how to do it. Being open minded and starting somewhere is such an effective way to move forward and…

Inside MorningsideTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Rebecca focused on long division of polynomials and applications of derivatives to functions.

In Year 11, Daniel worked through solving quadratic equations using the quadratic formula and revisited area properties for right-angled triangles.

For Year 12, Michael concentrated on bivariate data analysis and time series analysis, including calculating moving averages, as part of his exam preparation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, a student who transitioned from General Maths struggled to attempt questions independently; as one tutor noted, "she needed more guidance than expected with exam-style problems."

In another senior case, feedback provided on a PSMT draft was not fully addressed before final submission, meaning missed opportunities for improvement.

Meanwhile, in Year 8, messy written work during linear equations tasks made it hard to spot errors and slowed revision.

In primary years, unfinished homework remained an ongoing issue—especially with assigned worksheets—which meant less class time could be devoted to new concepts.

Recent Achievements

One Morningside tutor noticed Dyllan, a high school student, has started to tackle long division of polynomials independently after needing significant prompting in earlier sessions—he now checks his own work by expanding brackets without reminders.

Meanwhile, Phoenix, also in high school, made real strides using Excel for statistical analysis; he not only created scatter plots and regression lines but began interpreting relationships between variables on his own.

At the primary level, Mikayla shifted from waiting passively for help to actively asking questions when stuck during homework—something she hadn't done before this term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bulimba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Morningside State School.
