I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a comfortable and supportive environment where the student feels confident to ask questions and make mistakes. Learning really happens when students feel safe to try, even if they don’t get it right the first time. A tutor should also explain things in a way that makes sense to…

Teaching effectively so that the student can understand the content. It is important to make the students do their own work, rather than doing it for them as they do not learn effectively if the tutor does the work for them. The tutor must also commit to every class and treat every student equally with respect. - My strength are maths and…

Building a foundation of work ethic and problem solving which will continue to serve them throughout their education. I believe that I create a comfortable environment for a student to learn. In my view, the paramount role of a tutor is to cultivate a learning environment filled with patience and empathy. By recognising the challenges students may encounter along their learning journey and demonstrating empathy towards these obstacles, a positive and supportive environment is created between the student and tutor. This allows me to…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to be reliable, knowledgable and help the student reach and exceed their expectations. Also to be able to teach content in a way that makes learning fun and enjoyable is critical to a student's learning capacity. In the context of Science and Mathematics, the key aspect is HOW to think. Science requires imagination, innovation as well as an excellent recall and grasp of modern scientific understanding. Mathematics, being a tool - requires the students to be well-equipped with the basic mathematical tools. To directly answer this question; a tutor must…

I think it is important for the tutor to influence the student to be more enthusiastic towards his studies. It is easier to learn stuff with focus and the right attitude. The tutor has to try and make sessions interesting. Also, at the end of the day, the student must not be dependent on the tutor. As a tutor, you know you have succeeded when once…

I believe a tutor is not only a teacher but also a mentor. They are someone for the student to look up to, but also there to help the student develop their understanding through friendship and camaraderie. As they are separate from both school and home settings, they can offer an external and unique perspective on both academic and personal…

The tutor's first job is converting hard 'textbook language' to easy and illustrative concepts. Next is polishing the student's skills with extensive exercises while making sure he has time for other hobbies. It helps if the tutor is aware of things such as fun interactive quizzes or videos that helps makes concepts seem simpler while also keeping…

Tutor can be patient with their student and let them learn at their pace. Tutors are just not there to help students with their students. Their most important role is to be friends and be able to guide their students in the right direction. If tutors become friends, the students listen and trust them more. Of course this does not mean that students can take tutors for a ride. As a tutor I am hardworking, diligent and…

Inside MortlakeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lily worked on adding and subtracting fractions, then practiced multiplying and dividing both mixed and improper fractions using visual aids.

In Year 8, Ethan focused on expanding brackets in algebraic expressions and began factorising basic expressions for homework support.

For Year 11, Olivia reviewed the strategic role of financial management along with objectives of finance and explored the interdependence between finance and other business functions within her Commerce studies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 maths student often rushed to answers without showing step-by-step working, especially in algebra and inequalities—this made it hard to spot sign errors or missing pronumerals. "He tends to work out the answers in his head instead of writing out his working," a tutor noted, which led to small mistakes accumulating on assessments.

In senior economics, a Year 12 struggled with structuring business report evaluations and sometimes neglected reviewing class notes for macroeconomic concepts.

One Year 9 English student read quickly but overlooked grammatical errors and failed to organise ideas clearly in written responses, impacting both comprehension and expression.

Recent Achievements

One Mortlake tutor noticed real shifts across different year levels recently. In Year 8 maths, Tyler used to skip showing his working out, but now consistently sets it out for problems he can't do mentally, which has helped him catch errors before moving on.

In senior Business Studies, Kai moved from mostly descriptive writing to crafting more analytical paragraphs in his reports after targeted feedback—he now explains cause and effect instead of just listing facts.

Meanwhile, Zarraf (Year 6 English) went from hesitating to share ideas aloud to making thoughtful predictions about challenging texts and backing them up with details from the story.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Catholic Primary School.
