Be patient with them and encourage them to do their best. Consistency is key and results don't just appear overnight, trust the process and at the end all anyone can ask of you is to do your best. Another big thing is to always be honest with them, whether that means admitting that you don't know something (but can find out for them) or letting…

As mentioned above, tutoring gives me more space to understand a student's difficulty. Thus, I believe that a tutor's biggest responsibility is to patiently guide the student through that difficulty, in other words, to unlock their ability to comprehend a lingual matter. Additionally, a tutor's role also encompasses helping the students gain more…

The best thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them grow an understanding of analysis in their mind on how to approach and answer the relevant question. Students have to learn the material themselves, however a guidance is required to what is relevant material to read and where is the focus on the study. I feel that I can understand when a…

1. Be prepared. As a tutor, it is my responsibility to be prepared for the session. That includes preparing the lesson beforehand and getting everything ready. 2. Reviewing the fundamentals with the students. This means not jumping to advanced topics with the students when they might need a little refresher on the subject. In math, it is…

The most important thing is creating a personal relationship so that the teacher almost understands the student more than the student understands themselves. To engage their student in what they are being taught. Often, it is easy for tutors to treat teaching as a rote-memory recitation of their materials, without actually using other analogies and connective methods that students benefit from. If a tutor is unwilling to invest energy into their lessons, a student likewise will gain little enrichment.…

Tutors must have a solid passion to teach, including taking time to understand different ways to teach or provide content, or developing their own skills to allow students to understand a subject. A tutor should aim to see improved results provided the student puts work in to improve. Seeing results can develop encouragement and self-fulfilment…

It is that virtue that students bring back to their classroom ready to apply what they have learned during their tutor's session. Patience is a key value that I possess and that will make me succeed in this role. Acknowledging that different student…

In my opinion, a tutor can act as the bridge between the student and the learning outcome. I feel the job of a tutor is to instill confidence in the child and inculcate a joy of learning the subject. Inside MortlakeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lily worked on adding and subtracting fractions, then practiced multiplying and dividing both mixed and improper fractions using visual aids.

In Year 8, Ethan focused on expanding brackets in algebraic expressions and began factorising basic expressions for homework support.

For Year 11, Olivia reviewed the strategic role of financial management along with objectives of finance and explored the interdependence between finance and other business functions within her Commerce studies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 maths student often rushed to answers without showing step-by-step working, especially in algebra and inequalities—this made it hard to spot sign errors or missing pronumerals. "He tends to work out the answers in his head instead of writing out his working," a tutor noted, which led to small mistakes accumulating on assessments.

In senior economics, a Year 12 struggled with structuring business report evaluations and sometimes neglected reviewing class notes for macroeconomic concepts.

One Year 9 English student read quickly but overlooked grammatical errors and failed to organise ideas clearly in written responses, impacting both comprehension and expression.

Recent Achievements

One Mortlake tutor noticed real shifts across different year levels recently. In Year 8 maths, Tyler used to skip showing his working out, but now consistently sets it out for problems he can't do mentally, which has helped him catch errors before moving on.

In senior Business Studies, Kai moved from mostly descriptive writing to crafting more analytical paragraphs in his reports after targeted feedback—he now explains cause and effect instead of just listing facts.

Meanwhile, Zarraf (Year 6 English) went from hesitating to share ideas aloud to making thoughtful predictions about challenging texts and backing them up with details from the story.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Catholic Primary School.
