The role of a tutor is to provide additional support to students without hindering the learning that goes on during school. I would be able to assist students by creating an environment in which they feel safe, and encourage them to do the best they possibly can, while still maintaining a healthy balance between school and their own personal time.…

Tutoring can help strengthen subject comprehension, boost confidence, and build important learning skills. Tutoring gives students individualized attention that they don't get in a crowded classroom. This helps children who struggle to keep up. No single learning style fits every student, so I adapt to how the student understands and teach in such…

Build their confidence; I think once a student has confidence in themselves, and trust that they have what it takes to tackle even a small part of a subject, their view of that subject completely shifts, and most often it makes learning more enjoyable. That inner confidence also makes it more likely they work harder and succeed, as well as overall…

I think first and foremost is the support. This support comes in giving students help or advice when they ask for it, listening to what they have to say and especially in helping them achieve their goals. But this support also comes in the form of a tutor recognising when something isn't working, or when a student should try to do something on…

I think a tutor can not only help a student academically, but also help them unlock their true selves. I believe that as a tutor, if I provide a comfortable, positive and safe environment, I can not only help my students learn easier, but I can make them look forward to my lessons, and studying in general, boosting their mentality towards…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them confidence and courage to face life's challenges by helping them overcome the adversities they face academically. By setting a good role model for students and being someone they can look up to, students will themselves gain a sense of confidence when faced with academic and…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, foster a supportive learning environment, and tailor the teaching approach to meet the student's individual needs. First, helping students believe in their own abilities is crucial because confidence is the foundation of successful learning. Second,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop the student's understanding, confidence and skills relating to the subject, rather than just explaining information to them. The tutor should aim to create a supportive environment where the student feels comfortable to ask questions, make mistakes, and engage with the tutor to…

A tutor must have a good listening abilities so they can correct students mistakes and resolve them in the process of learning. Inside Mount ColahTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Liam worked on solving linear equations, including making x the subject and handling fractions and negatives.

Year 10 student Ella revised algebraic techniques by rearranging equations and tackling simultaneous equations using practice problems.

For Year 11, Sam focused on standard deviation and measures of spread in statistics, as well as representing data through cumulative histograms and Pareto charts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was hesitant to write out full working in algebra, often "prone to working on line," which led to confusion when reviewing multi-step problems.

In Year 11, one student skipped reading the textbook before lessons and attempted questions only after explanation; as a tutor noted, "I feel that he doesn't see the value in doing the work."

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student repeatedly avoided using visual aids for decimals and struggled with number placement in formal multiplication. This sometimes left them feeling stuck mid-question, unsure of the next step without external prompting.

Recent Achievements

One Mount Colah tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with algebraic concepts—this week, he completed several challenge questions almost entirely on his own and started laying out his working more clearly.

Another high schooler who'd struggled with measures of spread previously was able to tackle complex examples independently by the end of the session, after just a bit of initial guidance.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, one student who often waited for help now volunteered answers during multiplication practice and finished all ten problems without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hornsby Shire Library & Information Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount Colah Public School.
