One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to keep them motivated. However, this can be challenging especially when they have many knowledge gaps and feel fallen behind at school. A good tutor is able to identify and fill in those gaps, helping students realise their full potentials and gain confidence. It is also important…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are: 1. Helping students gain confidence as well as the skills they need to meet their goals. 2. Helping students relieve their academic stress and support them as much as I can. One of my main strengths is that I have numerous study techniques that I can share with them. Hence, my students…

Give the student confidence. Confidence either to persist with the hard work till they hit a breakthrough or the confidence to thing around the problems. There are a lot of students who don't lack in talent and just a couple little things are holding them back. Solving those can really help them grow. I am able to seperate a topic into byte sized…

Make them like learning for the sake of learning rather than chase after a mark. We as humans love learning but schools and other institutions often encourage chasing certain metrics rather than curiosity and wonder when it comes to learning a subject I can give constructive feedback on a student based on their performance and I encourage them to…

For me, the most important thing is helping students actually enjoy math and feel comfortable with the process of not knowing right away. A lot of math is about sitting with that discomfort, resisting the urge to panic, and trusting that if you think logically, you’ll find a way through—even if it’s not the “textbook†method. I want…

I will consistently encourage all my students to always try, and practise, and try again, until they master whatever they were first struggling with. Their dreams become my dreams for them, so I will never let my students give up on reaching their goals. Improvements do not happen overnight, but whenever they do happen, no matter how small, I…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond simply reviewing homework. A tutor must make sure the student truly understands the 'why' behind the concepts, especially in subjects like Math, Chemistry, and Biology. Rote memorization is temporary; genuine understanding, which comes from breaking down complex ideas, is permanent.…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student extend beyond academic instruction. While helping students grasp challenging concepts is crucial, equally vital is fostering a supportive and encouraging learning environment. Encouraging and patient when explaining concepts to students. Tutors need to provide encouragement as this will build both motivation within the student to do well in a subject, and increase their overall confidence in a difficult topic. I believe setting achievable goals is also an important thing a tutor can do. Patience is also critical, as…

The most vital thing a tutor can do is to make study fun , yes, a student who just remained worried about studies and exams should no longer be worried if he or she has a tutor . Inspire students to understand the importance and broader concepts within mathematics. I believe that making every session meaningful, productive but entertaining is key to learning. A tutor should make sure that the student is well-engaged in the session but still focussing on their weaknesses and strengths. A tutor should make a personalized learning experience for every student and build a relationship of trust with the student.…

Heather Goode, Mount Osmond

Inside Mount OsmondTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lucy worked on consolidating her understanding of index laws and practiced adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions.

In Year 10, Divyanshu tackled differentiating simple rational functions using first principles in Maths and focused on stoichiometry and unit conversions like %w/v and mol/L in Chemistry.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Zac reviewed tricky chain rule questions before learning the product rule in differentiation, then moved to Chemistry to deepen his grasp of chromatography concepts such as Rf values and retention time.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Chemistry, one student's written responses often lacked precise terminology and structure when explaining solubility or drawing organic molecules. As a tutor noted, "He struggles to view the entire problem and develop a 'game plan' before tackling a question," which led to confusion in multi-step tasks like titrations or back titration calculations.

In Year 8 Maths, another student hesitated to write out full working for negative numbers or complex fractions—sometimes only attempting parts they felt confident with—making it difficult to identify where misunderstandings occurred during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

A Mount Osmond tutor noticed Zac, a Year 9 student who previously struggled to write at length, completed an entire essay on his own and soon after scored an A on his English assignment—he's now identifying weak points in his writing without prompting.

Meanwhile, Divyanshu in senior high school chemistry has moved from needing support with ionic equations to independently solving unfamiliar problems and accurately suggesting chemical reagents during practice.

In a younger session, Lucy started tackling fraction questions she once avoided and now applies index laws with minimal help, even asking for extra practice when unsure.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Seymour College.
