The most important thing a tutor can do is provide a judgment-free, open space where students feel comfortable asking any question - even those that may seem obvious. This not only builds a strong rapport with the student but also helps solidify their understanding. My biggest strength would be my ability to listen to the student. I believe it's…

The students already have teachers at school. Rather than being just another teacher figure, a tutor is also a mentor that travels on a journey alongside the student. As such, the most important things they can do for the child is to be compassionate, patient, and support the child with the goals they want to achieve. I am patient, I take the time…

As a tutor I can provide various educational skills that can help a student that may struggle in a particular subject. As a tutor it is extremely important to provide patience to every student. Every student is different and requires skills that can enhance their own personal abilities. The most important thing I can do is help the students find…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is serve as a secondary teacher/mentor to a school teacher. As school teachers have to focus on a large class (usually around 30 students), they are unable to address the needs of each student. As each student has their own struggles and needs, an exterior tutor provides…

The most important thing I believe a tutor can do for a student is to inspire them and instil an appreciation for the subject they are teaching. Beyond just explaining different concepts and providing feedback, a tutor should make an effort to emphasize the value of the skills and knowledge they are teaching to the students. I think it's very…

I also believe that it is a tutors role to create a safe, respectful environment, built on mutual understanding and without judgement. Challenge · Reassure · Consolidate A tutor's most integral role is to harness the power of these 3 pillars of tutoring to establish a nurturing learning environment where students are encouraged to think innovatively and step out of their comfort zone. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to what they are asking, and targeting their weak areas within the prospective subject. By doing so the tutor should aim to tailor each lesson accordingly. I think my strengths as a tutor would be my perseverance, clarity when explaining concepts, the ability to identify a…

A tutor can do many things for their students. They should be able to motivate, support, inspire and teach from the heart. Sharren is wonderful. They have formed an instant connection, and Bree is already feeling more confident and did an open book maths test yesterday without looking at the book hardly at all. Sharren is already a part of the house when i walk through the door and she is already in my opinion, the best tutor for Bree

Inside Mount PritchardTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Arabella practised telling time on both analogue and digital clocks, and compared fractions visually using shapes.

Year 7 student Elena focused on interpreting column graphs in data, as well as simplifying algebraic expressions by collecting like terms and substituting values for variables.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student worked through quadratic equations using the quadratic formula, then applied trigonometry concepts to solve right-angled triangle problems with step-by-step guidance.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student avoided showing working in algebra, saying "I just went straight to the answer," which hid sign errors and made it difficult to spot calculation slips—especially with negatives.

In a Year 7 session, homework was brought in the wrong notebook and worded questions were skipped if they looked hard; this led to gaps when reviewing feedback.

Meanwhile, a senior student tackling quadratic factorisation struggled to attempt new question types independently, hesitating unless prompted.

In primary years, a focus on only familiar times tables slowed progress with division tasks, while rushed written work meant punctuation and layout were inconsistent even when answers were correct.

Recent Achievements

One Mount Pritchard tutor noticed a Year 10 student who'd always hesitated with substitution and parallel lines start to independently solve these questions after several weeks of targeted practice, now confidently working through them without prompting.

In Year 7, a student who previously rushed and made frequent errors on "jump strategy" problems slowed down, took her time, and answered every question correctly in the last session—a big shift from her earlier frustration.

Meanwhile, a younger learner who used to struggle telling time now reads both digital and analogue clocks smoothly and even draws clock faces accurately on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Whitlam Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic Primary School Mount Pritchard.
