The capacity to communicate in such a way that the learner feels driven, excited, and confident in their ability to master and enjoy whatever challenges come along is one of the most crucial personal attributes of a competent instructor. In other words, a good tutor needs to be good with people, especially when it comes to engaging young kids in…

I believe that as a tutor, I have the responsibility of figuring out the problem areas that the students are facing and helping them overcome their problem areas. Along with this, the tutor should be skilled enough to make the topics interesting for the child to understand properly and keep them fully engaged Having a strong research background…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to foster a sense of confidence and independence in learning. By providing clear guidance, personalized support, and encouragement, a tutor helps students not only understand the material but also develop critical thinking skills and self-reliance. This empowers the student to tackle…

Answering the questions a student asks as they only ask if they truly do not understand a particular part and as a tutor its our duty to make them understand. A key for tutoring is to have patience to guide someone no matter how slow a person understands the particular subject and I do have that key. Plus, I would take the responsibility making…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, build a student's confidence, and make learning feel approachable rather than intimidating. A good tutor doesn't just teach content, but also encourages students, helps them believe in their abilities, and guides them through challenges patiently. Making…

I think the most important aspect as a tutor is to listen to the student and foster independence. They should be able to ask as many questions as possible and make them think and learn about problem solving. I think there are a lot of qualities that go into being a good tutor. A few of the most important skills for the field are patience and…

A good tutor should be flexible and adapt to the student's needs. Rather than having a 'one formula suits all' attitude, a tutor should build on the student's strengths and address their weaknesses. They should help students overcome their fear and anxiety towards the topics. A tutor must help a student develop an aptitude for the subject. As a…

A tutor, besides supporting their student academically at the moment, should be able to build the learning culture by stimulating the student's curiosity and appreciation towards the subject and studying as a whole. I think the most important thing, is that you not only teach students. You learn to grow with them, you make sure that your students are able to be successful, and you are a small contributor to that success, but along the way, you grow with them, you understand the way they learn, so that you could learn with them. I think that my strengths, are…

A tutor's job is to teach. However, I do believe that the student's experience during their time learning most important. From my observations, students will not really pay attention if they are not interested or if they are not having a good time, which is why, in my opinion, it is important that students are having a good time while they are…

I firmly believe that making student's confident about the subject is the most important thing. A tutor is someone who guides the student to the solution also letting the student explore the new entities. It is not like providing the question and the answer at the same time. A tutor must be able to win the heart of the student so the student loves…

Inside MulgraveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 Oscar reviewed circle theorems involving intersecting chords, secants and tangents, as well as tackled sketching parabolas to build confidence in algebraic graphing.

For Year 7 Hayley, sessions focused on strengthening her grasp of the distributive property and using visual approaches to clarify key math operations.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Hayley practiced explaining her problem-solving steps from a recent test and explored logic-based activities like Rebus puzzles and story riddles to enhance critical thinking alongside mathematics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, one student did not bring class notebooks or show workings with homework; "did not have workings to the homework I have given so reassigned it, to be completed with workings." This made it hard to spot where confusion started in algebra.

A Year 7 student avoided word problems, losing motivation when faced with longer questions—especially in story riddles—so didn't get full exposure to key reasoning skills.

In VCE maths, another relied heavily on notes and rarely attempted questions independently during revision sessions, leading to missed feedback opportunities before tests.

Recent Achievements

One Mulgrave tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to link math to real-life scenarios now using calculations confidently in the context of his athletic training, even initiating discussions about applying statistics from sports science.

In a recent high school session, Hayley identified where she typically lost track in multi-step linear equations and independently developed an organised approach that helped her resolve several story riddles without prompting.

Meanwhile, a primary student who used to avoid worded math problems now spots her own errors as she explains solutions aloud and manages to answer parts of challenging written questions on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John Vianney's School.
