The most important things a tutor can do for their student would be investing in connection. A good tutor will take the time to connect meaningfully with the student and their families. They will be caring and compassionate, but also professional and organized. Secondly, fostering independence. A good tutor wants to create a student that no…

Tutor can be a life changing mentors in some ones life. I have a personal experience for that. Smith was one of my students while I was working for tutor doctors and he was getting below 50% for his exams in the algebra class. Tutors need to get to know the students, what they are good at and their weaknesses so tutors can help them out the best. Tutors need to have the knowledge to teach students and to make sure students can learn from them efficiently. They should form a deep relationship with students so students are able to trust them with learning. Tutors should…

I believe the most important aspects of a tutor are to make learning enjoyable, to build confidence and to encourage a problem solving attitude. The more fun one can have learning, the more you want to try and work on your weaknesses. Being confident in yourself also improves the will to learn and problem solving builds resilience when answers…

I acknowledge that passing on knowledge such as how to use Pythagoras is important, I would love to inspire students to love learning and being creative in the way that approaches a math issue. When students grow up, it is not the quadratic equations or math problems that helps them to thrive in higher education and life, but it is the ability to…

I believe that the most important responsibility of a tutor is to inspire curiosity and passion for study among students. This can be done by making lessons much more interactive and fascinating, which will encourage them to study for themselves, not for the sake of someone else. Also, tutors should create an environment where students feel…

I believe that the best thing that a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the self-confidence and self-belief to persevere through any difficulties they may face in their academics. This can be done through the gradual withdrawal of support as the student grows in their skills and confidence. Once the student has established their…

A tutor needs to realize how much support students need and what skills they are lacking. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. Students who reach out for tutoring often do so because they need or want additional support, meaning it is essential to listen to what the student's goals are, what they may be struggling with, and how they feel they learn best. One of the benefits of tutoring is…

Maximize their potential for learning and increase their awareness of their own strengths by creating a conducive learning environment (i.e. strength-based approach, encouragement, inquiry-based learning, one-on-one teaching and learning). The best thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand the student's academic needs and address them in a very professional way. In my point of view, every student has potential and a…

Inside MulgraveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 Oscar reviewed circle theorems involving intersecting chords, secants and tangents, as well as tackled sketching parabolas to build confidence in algebraic graphing.

For Year 7 Hayley, sessions focused on strengthening her grasp of the distributive property and using visual approaches to clarify key math operations.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Hayley practiced explaining her problem-solving steps from a recent test and explored logic-based activities like Rebus puzzles and story riddles to enhance critical thinking alongside mathematics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, one student did not bring class notebooks or show workings with homework; "did not have workings to the homework I have given so reassigned it, to be completed with workings." This made it hard to spot where confusion started in algebra.

A Year 7 student avoided word problems, losing motivation when faced with longer questions—especially in story riddles—so didn't get full exposure to key reasoning skills.

In VCE maths, another relied heavily on notes and rarely attempted questions independently during revision sessions, leading to missed feedback opportunities before tests.

Recent Achievements

One Mulgrave tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to link math to real-life scenarios now using calculations confidently in the context of his athletic training, even initiating discussions about applying statistics from sports science.

In a recent high school session, Hayley identified where she typically lost track in multi-step linear equations and independently developed an organised approach that helped her resolve several story riddles without prompting.

Meanwhile, a primary student who used to avoid worded math problems now spots her own errors as she explains solutions aloud and manages to answer parts of challenging written questions on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John Vianney's School.
