The most important thing a tutor can do is provide a safe open learning environment where the student is actually comfortable to ask questions. I remember sometimes with bad teachers I would be hesitant to ask questions because I was embarrassed that I didn’t know said thing. I want to instil confidence in my students so they are able to ask…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make learning simple by building from a very strong foundation. The reason many students struggle with complex concepts is because their foundation is either weak or vague. My approach has always been to start with the basics, explain them in simple terms, and then gradually build…

I believe a teacher can either make or break a student and I've seen both scenarios happen around me. I believe as a tutor the most important thing I can do is boost their confidence or build it from scratch if they have no confidence at all. Be a good friend and to create a stress-free, comfortable environment for my students. I have handled a…

I believe in the importance of developing a student's own independent thinking skills, so that they gather the confidence to correctly respond to any problem that an exam or test may pose individually as I, the tutor, will not be there to help in assessments. By doing this, the student can cement beneficial study habits and obtain their academic…

Being an engaging teacher and being able to adapt. As a tutor, your providing an outlet for them to learn when they are not getting enough out of their classroom. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to allow the student to feel free to ask questions and to query explanations. This way, it allows for me to answer their initial query as well as giving me the opportunity to proactively infer other areas that they may not completely understand. My strengths are centred…

A trait I consider to be very important as a tutor is being a good leader. They should be very responsible for their actions, meaning that they will ensure each tutoring session is effective for the student. They should also be assertive, trustworthy and mindful, which helps them offer guidance to other students. Lastly, they should keep an open…

To build their confidence in the subject, If they feel they are not able to complete a section and lose motivation they should be shown that they absolutely can, and to not give up. I would say a tutors' ultimate goal would be to get in sync with the way the student is taught in their respective schools, colleges or universities. Additionally, it is extremely important to make friends with the students, as this is necessary for proper engagement. I am not afraid to do some research when it comes to getting a student to…

The most important thing I do for a student is providing personalised support and continued dedication to their students. This involves allowing students to believe in their ability to succeed and encouraging…

Inside MurrumbeenaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Lily focused on simplifying fractions and practising multiplication facts up to 10, using visual aids for support.

Year 7 student Ava tackled linear equations and explored plotting points on the Cartesian plane, including drawing straight-line graphs by hand.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ethan worked through trigonometry concepts such as bearings and distances, as well as calculating surface area and volume of composite shapes.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student left their homework incomplete and was "easily distracted," often rushing through fractions and worded problems without full confidence, as one tutor observed.

In a Year 8 algebra session, skipping steps when solving equations led to small errors—practicing showing all working became necessary for test preparation.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student relied on back-checking answers but occasionally misapplied formulas before correcting themselves.

The struggle to commit times tables to memory persisted in Year 5; repeated revision was needed as material was quickly forgotten, leading to frequent revisiting of the same multiplication concepts week after week.

Recent Achievements

One Murrumbeena tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to tackle statistics problems alone—she completed her entire homework set without needing prompts.

In Year 12, another student who used to second-guess herself with complex loan calculations is now confidently comparing interest rates and can choose the most cost-effective loan on her own.

Meanwhile, a younger student who struggled to show his maths working has started organising each step clearly in his book instead of skipping ahead, finishing all ten practice questions accurately for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnegie Library and Community Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Murrumbeena Primary School.
