A tutor shouldn't be the individual who would only be associated with studies and stuff. A tutor should be someone to whom a student can approach with any sorts of problem with the expectation that their tutor can find a solution to it. Moreover, a tutor should be a guiding light to the student. - Communication - Experience -…

I think the most important thing a tutor can be for a student is patience. Everyone works and learns on different levels and it is up to the tutor to make the learning of the subject fun and enjoyable. My biggest strengths when tutoring are my passion for the subjects I talk about, and most importantly being calm and patient to those I…

Tutors can help students develop the knowledge required for their schooling, but also help students develop the skills to learn efficiently and to a deeper level. This sets up good foundations for the future, if the student would like to study more in the future in the field, and will be helpful for future endeavors (university for example). I am…

To support and give great motivation to the student is the most important thing. Having the thought that everybody can learn and be able to success in learning if the student found interest in the subject. I often explain the solution with step by step method, trying to simplify complex solution, and I often use easier example or simulation in…

I believe the most important aspect of tutoring is being able to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of your students with pinpoint accuracy, in order to holistically improve their attributes as a learner, as well as balance encouragement with criticism, to make sure that students are simultaneously confident and grounded. I think the fact that I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is help them find ways to learn most effectively and reach their full potential. Simply providing a student with notes and memorisation tricks will not work for long, whereas teaching a student how to approach the various challenges a subject presents will provide them with valuable…

I consider openness and willingness to hear out students' problems at the earliest possible moment to ensure that a student feels confident with something they may initially be unfamiliar with and are about to dive deeper in to be one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. As a tutor, I believe I have a strong ability and…

Its a very open question in my point of view but, if I want to say it as brief as I can its backing them up making them reach a certain level and then teaching them how to fish instead of just giving them fish and when they learn how to fish giving them tips for catching bigger fish. I believe that when the right tutor is paired with the right student, they can help the student to understand the pleasure of academic subjects. A tutor's responsibility, in my opinion, should be to identify why the student may be struggling in that specific area of academics and then to adjust their teaching approach and technique to cater for…

Foremost, a tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far, incorporating a good…

Inside MurrumbeenaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Lily focused on simplifying fractions and practising multiplication facts up to 10, using visual aids for support.

Year 7 student Ava tackled linear equations and explored plotting points on the Cartesian plane, including drawing straight-line graphs by hand.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ethan worked through trigonometry concepts such as bearings and distances, as well as calculating surface area and volume of composite shapes.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student left their homework incomplete and was "easily distracted," often rushing through fractions and worded problems without full confidence, as one tutor observed.

In a Year 8 algebra session, skipping steps when solving equations led to small errors—practicing showing all working became necessary for test preparation.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student relied on back-checking answers but occasionally misapplied formulas before correcting themselves.

The struggle to commit times tables to memory persisted in Year 5; repeated revision was needed as material was quickly forgotten, leading to frequent revisiting of the same multiplication concepts week after week.

Recent Achievements

One Murrumbeena tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to tackle statistics problems alone—she completed her entire homework set without needing prompts.

In Year 12, another student who used to second-guess herself with complex loan calculations is now confidently comparing interest rates and can choose the most cost-effective loan on her own.

Meanwhile, a younger student who struggled to show his maths working has started organising each step clearly in his book instead of skipping ahead, finishing all ten practice questions accurately for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnegie Library and Community Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Murrumbeena Primary School.
