I feel like one of the most common problems I see with fellow University Students is a mental block carried over from their high school days - the preconception that they "simply can't do" particular things or that they're not good enough at a subject to attempt things. As such, I feel like getting rid of these blocks by showing students that even…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to find out the student's learning method and try to adapt to that. Everyone learns differently and tutoring should be focused on helping the student in the best possible way that they can receive. I can easily adapt to new situations and environments which will help since every…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to guide them and give them strategies so they are able to learn and comprehend material with less assistance over time. I also think it is important to assist them in a way that gets them thinking, whether that is by asking them questions or working through problems so they can…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is break the subject down as much as possible and really ensure that they understand in their own way before moving on to the next thing. Apart from delivering a clear idea of what the student should know for school, a tutor should be able to cater to the learning needs of the student. A tutor should also act as a pillar of support and encourage the student when learning the subject may be difficult. A tutor should offer a safe environment where the student is allowed to make…

To be honest private tutoring is excess work for students. Students are already fed up with school work and then coming back home for further math is not a enjoyment for a typical student (I was the same in my childhoodðŸ˜). So the tutor must be able to make the subject more enjoyable and less stressful. So that the student won't find it hectic…

Good grades would be the obvious answer. However, if I can spark an interest in the subject for the student the grades will logically follow. To be able to build a personal relationship with the student where the student is comfortable to ask questions as to what they don't understand, and be able to answer them clearly and patiently. Inside NedlandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sofia worked on identifying and using nouns, adverbs, verbs, and adjectives in English, alongside practicing multiplication tables for 4, 6, 7, 8, and 12.

In Year 8, Chloe focused on understanding isomorphic graphs and adjacency matrices in preparation for an upcoming test.

For Year 10, Daniel tackled Pythagoras' Theorem by finding hypotenuse lengths as well as working through problems requiring calculation of unknown side lengths given the hypotenuse.

Recent Challenges

In recent lessons, a Year 9 student did not complete assigned homework and sometimes brought only answers rather than full working, which made it hard to pinpoint where understanding was lost.

A tutor noted, "He relied on mental maths for division instead of writing steps," leading to repeated errors in basic calculations.

In Year 11 Maths Methods, messy written work during standard deviation questions meant time was wasted hunting for calculation slips instead of focusing on new concepts.

Another senior student skipped practicing harder problems and depended heavily on calculators before attempting questions by hand, especially under exam pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Nedlands noticed that a Year 10 student who used to get stuck on worded trigonometry questions is now breaking down each part independently and double-checking his steps, which wasn't happening a few weeks ago.

Another recent high school session saw Chloe challenge herself by working through matrices unaided for the first time, showing she's comfortable relying on her own skills.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who previously hesitated to ask for help with tricky multiplication now openly checks his thinking out loud and requests clarification whenever he's unsure.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nedlands Primary School.
