For them to finish a lesson and have learnt something new or a new method or technique that may save them time or understand the question a lot easier now. I can explain information at understandable and clear way but if the student needs further clarification I am able to teach them further. I also like to use visual aids rather than speaking to…

The most important things a maths tutor can do for a student involve making the student understand the concepts at a deep level, rather than tutoring them solely for the purpose of achieving higher grades. I believe a good tutor should remove the fear of a subject, if any, from a student's mind and encourage them to learn in more detail, while…

the most important things that a maths tutor can do is enhancing creativities, and building logic to solve the problem. because sometimes, a tutor can improve students' grade but by teaching tricks to solve math problem, not by enhancing creativities. trying to improve solving problem logic and increase creativities can take longer time but once…

The most important thing is to be able to understand how each student have different styles of learning and as a teacher we should adopt with each child's differences and be flexible to our teaching methods. Other thing is, in order for students to absorb information clearly, the environment of the class should be positive and enthusiastic. -…

I believe that a maths tutor plays a huge part in a student's life. They can make a difference in a positive way by not only supporting but inspiring them to become a useful member of society. A tutor should understand each of their students individually, find their positive points and help to capitalize on them. Also, finding out their weak…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to make the student realize the value of the subject or the topic they are learning. It should come as no shock, later on in their life, when they are put in a situation where they can use the knowledge they have learned to achieve a certain objective. I believe that I have the…

I think it is very important to create an environment where the child has fun and therefore likes the time learning and learns better. As a maths tutor it is vital that they are encouraging and always find solutions to help a student who may find a certain aspects of a subject difficult or they may not like. It is also important as a tutor to listen and respond to the students needs and goals, and be organised to set those small stepping stones to help the student to achieve…

Empathy is one of the most underrated quality that a maths tutor must have in them. A student may take time to understand a new concept and have millions of questions regarding the same, but the teacher needs to understand that it's their first time grasping this concept and they might not capture it as fast and easily as the tutor or other…

According to me a good tutor should gather adequate information and verify their student’s needs to create an individual approach for their learning. Listen, support, challenge and encourage the students to challenge themselves. Be thoroughly aware of the learning areas in need of focus and then prepare the resources and activities that will support and challenge the student. Close communication with the parents and school will ensure there are no 'gaps' in the learning progress. Maturity,…

The most important things would be that the student can rely on the tutor for assistance without being worried to ask. I believe that the most important thing as the tutor is to let the students fully understand the concept that is being taught before letting them solve any questions. Not just helping them to understand the concept but the ways to apply that knowledge to a question, as in school you are briefly taught the concept and in most cases left alone to…

I believe the most important thing is for tutors to encourage students well and motivate with positive reinforcement. Very often I see students struggle on a difficult topic and this quickly demotivates them from working. This can bleed into other areas of work that they would otherwise not struggle too much in, resisting putting in effort when…

Being able to communicate well with their student to ensure that their student has a good level of understanding. I think that tutors should give the student a perspective to view their subject from that suits the student and assist their progression. They should also provide a personal connection which helps to develop the student's appreciation for the subject. A tutor also needs to help the student get through major difficulties that they encounter so the…

Inside NewingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Amy focused on algebraic factorisation and worked through inverse relationships, using diagrams to reinforce concepts.

For Year 9, Marcus revised trigonometric differentiation alongside key techniques in mathematical induction, applying these to a range of practice questions.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Grace tackled long division methods and explored number patterns by solving problems from her workbook and discussing strategies aloud.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often avoided writing out algebra steps, especially in factorisation and inverse relationships, which led to persistent sign errors—"he tried solving monics mentally but lost track of negatives," as one tutor noted.

In Year 11 calculus sessions, anxiety about remembering derivative rules resulted in over-reliance on formula sheets rather than internalising key concepts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student working on division would hesitate to set out the numbers clearly, causing confusion mid-question.

For one Year 7 learner, forgetting required formulas meant time was wasted searching for them instead of applying knowledge during practice.

Recent Achievements

One Newington tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with derivatives now confidently tackles even tricky motion and graphing problems on her own, after weeks of struggling to connect the steps.

In a recent high school session, another student who had always guessed at complex number questions finally started asking for help when stuck—an important shift from his earlier reluctance to admit confusion.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who would freeze up during multi-digit addition now works through sums independently, only needing reminders not to skip carrying numbers.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Sofia was progressing and Sofia was very comfortable with the tutor. She gave Sofia a lot of help and her understanding of maths had improved and she learned to enjoyed maths, even the homework set and that surprised me. Thank you again.

Chelsea loves Melanie as her tutor. She is a great tutor, smart, very friendly, and very patient. She has all the quality as a tutor and we did like the way she taught Chelsea. Thank you so much for giving Chelsea the best tutor, we are happy with everything.

We have been very happy with Katharine's tutoring. She has been amazing and put in a lot of effort with Blaine. We are very happy to continue tutoring.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Auburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Newington Public School.
