The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be there for them not only as a teacher but also as a friend. Different people experience different things on a daily basis, it would be best for the student to know that they are being understood and listened to when they're having a hard time. I think that I am a pretty down-to-earth…

A tutor can give personalised learning experience to students where in the student gets the attention individually which he or she is not able to get in a classroom. Also, a tutor can help in boosting the confidence and morale of the students. They help in building learning skills as well. As a tutor, I believe I have strong communucation skills…

I think that the most important things that a tutor can do for a student would be to inspire them to love the subjects that they take and study, to be able to inspire them to do their work and really work at it in their own time, such that the tutoring isn't a dependency but a supplement to their success. Once that's achieved, it becomes much…

I consider effective communication to be the most important thing a tutor can have for a student, as this one quality filters into all aspects of the job as a tutor. This allows the tutor to gain an understanding of the specific goals or concerns of the student to then maximise the use of sessions, allowing for substantial growth. I believe my…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to act as both an academic and emotional mentor to alleviate some of the stress that comes with studying. Naturally, it is expected for tutors to help students with breaking down the content into manageable concepts for the student to understand. However, aspects such as study…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is awaken curiosity and interest in the student. With no urge to ask questions and absorb knowledge, learning would become a challenging task for both the teacher and the student. My strengths as a tutor come from my ability to empathise and understand my students. Possessing a bachelor's…

Build a personal relationship with them and understand what the student does and doesn't like. Having being tutored myself, I didn't respond as well with someone who could not meet me at my level than I did with a tutor who I felt I could relate to and trust. I am calm and caring, which I think is really important in tutoring, especially when…

I think a tutor should empower students to think for themselves, as this is what is required for the student to succeed independently when taking exams. So the most important thing I could do as a tutor is to encourage students to work out answers rather than giving it to them immediately. I pride myself on being patient. I believe strongly that…

A tutors time is the most important thing for a student. If a student requires some extra attention due to doubts it is the duty of the tutor to provide him/her with the extra time and support. No matter which subject the student is learning, s/he needs to know why s/he needs to learn it. Recently, Diane Tavenner, the innovator of American education encourages students to learn whatever they want by asking them to solve problem by themselves. In the field of applied linguistics, we call it 'boost input by producing output'. I believe…

The most important thing I can do for a student is be flexible and patient with them and build a newfound sense of confidence. Being the avenue for that…

While helping students learn is obviously important, the psychological and social aspects of tutoring are arguably much more important. A good tutor will help give their students the support and connection they need so that they can become better, more confident and independent learners. Develop their love/passion for a particular subject/field. For young minds, effective tutoring/teaching is extremely important as it makes them aware of their career options and shapes them for good future prospects. When tutoring is improper, a student might quickly lose interest in a subject area which otherwise they may prove to be good at. I…

I believe creating a comfortable environment for the student to thrive in, and being able to adapt to different students learning styles are among the most important things a tutor can do. Alongside this, a tutor should be able to explain topics in an interesting, yet simple way, whilst simultaneously pushing the students knowledge. I am able to…

Help a student gain the confidence needed to know what they need to do in studying for a subject, as well as the desire to succeed in that area, knowing that they can with the required commitment. Inside North BalgowlahTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lilly focused on strengthening multiplication and division skills, using games like "Hit the Button" to build times tables fluency and then worked through strategies for remembering tricky groups such as 4s and 12s.

In Year 9, Amelie has been tackling Surds—simplifying, multiplying/dividing, and rationalising denominators—as well as consolidating her understanding of volume formulas in compound shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Jerry concentrated on algebraic factorisation methods and revising equations in preparation for upcoming tests, often working through textbook exercises and practice questions to target weaker areas.

Recent Challenges

One student lost marks in a recent Year 8 Maths exam for not showing working and relying too much on mental calculations. As noted, "he said that he lost a lot of marks in his exam as he did not show his working out."

During algebra revision, calculation errors crept in when steps weren't clearly set out or the calculator wasn't used reliably.

In senior Physics (Year 12), another student's notes were described as needing better layout: "Her setting out—we will continue to practice good setting out so it becomes a habit." This led to confusion revisiting circular motion questions before assessments.

Recent Achievements

A North Balgowlah tutor recently saw Jerry, a Year 8 student, shift from rushing through algebra to slowing down and double-checking his work—he now catches his own calculation errors before asking for help.

Meanwhile, Clara in Year 12 has started tackling past exam papers independently and explaining her approach out loud when stuck, which marks a big change from earlier sessions where she hesitated to try new question types.

For a younger student, Lilly (Year 3) took real ownership of her times tables practice by showing how she fixed mistakes on "Hit the Button" and talking through what she learned each time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Northern Beaches Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Farmhouse Montessori School.
