I think one of the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is translate concepts in the students language. For example, some students are visual learners, while some are through written or algebraic proof. It's vital to teach in a way that matches the students thinking to ensure that the student no longer finds the subject…

Parents of my students frequently tell me that their kids feel safe and loved in my classroom. As someone who grew up in a family that struggled financially, I am constantly looking out for signs that a youngster may be hungry, exhausted, or in need. One sixth-grade student immediately stood out to me when I first started teaching because he was…

A tutor can teach according to the need of a student which is not possible in a class. Even a child can tell his or her weakness frankly which they can't express in the class I start from the basic. It is always important for the tutor to be able to clearly explain the concepts in a subject and how to apply them, but I also think that tutors should be able to provide advice on how to tackle the more stressful years of school in general, such as how to organise their time, when to take breaks etc. I can explain things properly and provide…

I think the most important things a maths tutor can do are to ease any fears or concerns students may have regarding their own performance and encourage or help them to try new methods of learning that are most suitable for the student. A tutor must be able to understand the student's situation. For example, identifying a student's weaknesses and effectively build basics to turn the weakness into a strength. Ultimately, the student should be able to feel proud of their perseverance and commitment throughout their academic journey while the tutor is just someone who is able to…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to mentor them in how to think about concepts, ideas, and problems. I use 'mentor' here deliberately as we usually see a teacher force a perspective or method of teaching. If a student can grasp why an idea logically flows from one to the next, I believe a passion for the subject…

I believe the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to boost his/her confidence. Usually, a student who struggles in a specific topic loathes the topic itself. This requires some time to bring the student up to speed again. I completed year 12 with Mathematics as a major and then studied engineering. I am a banker for over 15…

Inside North ParramattaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Jack worked on revising long-form subtraction, as well as developing his understanding of fractions and ratios.

For Year 10, Sophie tackled simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods, alongside practice in manipulating linear equations into gradient-intercept form with worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Maya focused on financial maths concepts such as compound interest and interpreting investment graphs, plus explored appreciation and inflation calculations within real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student's written working for algebra—especially when changing the subject—was often "minimal and messy," making it hard to spot sign errors or follow her logic in multi-step equations.

In Year 8, forgetting to complete assigned homework on a crime fiction short story left gaps in feedback and momentum heading into the next class.

For a senior English student, delays finishing research tasks meant ideas were sometimes underdeveloped when drafting essays.

During a Year 7 maths session, over-reliance on doing calculations mentally led to steps being skipped; confusion with unit conversions lingered during measurement problems as a result.

Recent Achievements

A North Parramatta tutor recently saw a Year 11 student move from hesitating over "changing the subject" in equations to confidently working through those questions with far less prompting, even managing some complex blood alcohol content problems independently.

Another high schooler who used to skip essay planning now arrives with research notes and a self-chosen topic, showing clear initiative and more structured arguments during English sessions.

In primary, one younger student who previously rushed through maths steps is now carefully setting out each calculation line by line—last session, she completed all her area questions neatly without missing a step.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Lauren had her first Tutorial with Caitlin today  and Caitlin loved her straight away with confidence built on day one. So far, so good :0)

Thank you for your email.  So far so good, Kristopher is very good and Sammi is very happy as she is now starting to understand maths. My husband and I are very pleased. :)

Cassidy has had one session with Scott. Cassidy came home very positive, saying that Scott was great at explaining concepts and that he will benefit from his tutoring support. Cassidy related well with Scott and seemed very impressed by his level of knowledge and by his academic progress at university. In effect, Scott is a great role model for Cassidy. I hope this all continues well.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dundas Valley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Redeemer Baptist School.
