I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to act as both an academic and emotional mentor to alleviate some of the stress that comes with studying. Naturally, it is expected for tutors to help students with breaking down the content into manageable concepts for the student to understand. However, aspects such as study…

Be calm and understand that everyone thinks different, and just because you or another students gets it, the other student could struggle with it. Also find the particular concept or idea that a student cannot connect. Moreover, to track their process and be sure to work on their mistakes continuously. I worked in a tutoring center this year,…

Don’t make students memorize, make them understand it in their own way. A lot of the topics that are taught can actually be related to previous topics. If they can see that connection between each topic, then understanding tends to become easier. Also, we shouldn’t put too much pressure on them. That means don’t explain too quickly, but…

Someone once told me a great teacher is not a messiah but a guide. As a tutor, I do not gift my mentees the treasure of knowledge but rather act as a guide toward achieving them. I believe the most important thing that a tutor can do for their students in the limited time that they have is to show them how to study on their own and succeed even…

No matter which subject the student is learning, s/he needs to know why s/he needs to learn it. Recently, Diane Tavenner, the innovator of American education encourages students to learn whatever they want by asking them to solve problem by themselves. In the field of applied linguistics, we call it 'boost input by producing output'. I believe…

The most important thing by far, especially that I have found over the years, is to have a presence that shows genuine concern for the student's understanding. I believe tutors bear much more of a responsibility than they let on. In my experience, the way a tutor approaches a problem with a student, no matter how trivial, can mean the difference…

As a tutor, it is important that you pass on the right knowledge to the student. Make them think about things by themselves instead of giving them straight away. A tutor, shouldn't discourage students if they ask a dumb question, they should resolve all their queries with a good understanding. A tutor's job is to support a student and be curious…

Ultimately, I think a good tutor teaches the student skills that they can utilize in their general learning and subject specific study. A tutor should be in a position to be a mentor to the student and share their experience in relation to studying their subject. This can help the student overcome what can initially be a daunting task as it is a…

Inside NorthbridgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Luca focused on mastering algebraic equations with fractions and brackets, then applied these skills to solve formulas and generate equations from word problems.

Year 8 student Nick practised analysing box-plot graphs and calculating cumulative frequency, using diagrams to visualise data for his upcoming assessment.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Felix worked on converting mixed and improper fractions and improved his understanding of dependent and independent clauses through targeted grammar exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student's over-reliance on mental calculation—"I can do this in my head"—meant he often skipped written working for tricky percentage and exam questions, leading to repeated sign errors that took extra time to correct.

In Year 11 English, a pattern emerged: after setbacks understanding complex poems, confidence dropped and linking sentences became repetitive, with conclusions simply rephrasing topic sentences instead of building on earlier explanations. As one tutor noted, "he needed prompting to notice the repetitiveness."

For a Year 8 student in algebra, messy working out and inconsistent note-taking made it hard to review mistakes or track progress during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Northbridge tutoring session saw a high school student who previously rushed through reading comprehension tasks start pausing to re-read questions and double-check answers, resulting in noticeably more precise responses.

Another tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to struggle with structuring essays now independently draft clear thesis statements and introduction paragraphs for history topics, after initially needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently showed new initiative by attempting all multiplication questions before asking for help—whereas before, she would hesitate or wait for prompts.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

My biggest accomplishment: Great kid in grade 4, energetic and fun to tutor, although lacked concentration and confidence in maths. I showed him simple maths tricks that no curriculum teaches (e.g. how to figure out 11 times tables to any number). He understood it well, but the biggest boost he had was the confidence he got from knowing something the other kids didn't. He started to enjoy maths a lot more and his scores and attitude improved. His care givers were very happy about it. I got a big kick from steering him in the right direction and I hope he carries on this confidence in all his endevours. With Ezy Math, what I felt was great were the weekly tutoring tips/themes. It helped a lot in knowing that there are many different approaches to many different kids' habits/attitudes (e.g. as above, just confidence boosting can greatly improve a child's performance). It was also great in having that as a tool to keep in touch and keep learning as the job progresses. 21st July 2012

Ezy Math Tutoring is a company that I would comfortably work with again as it provided me with the opportunity to work with students commited to improving in the classroom. Ezy Math Tutoring is not only a company that aims to help students with their mathematics but goes above and beyond to help clients with their general student careers, through the Continuing Education Program modules that tutors are asked to go through with their students on a regular basis. I liked the purpose they served. Ezy Math Tutoring finds great importance in informing the parents about their childs progress. The monthly progress reports help busy parents keep up to date with the work being covered and the overall progress of their child, which was the main attraction for me. If you are seeking a professional service that provides results I would highly reccomend Ezy Math Tutoring to any of the parents and prospective tutors out there. 22nd July 2012

Ezy Math Tutoring provided me with a lot of support, resources and training during my time working for them. I found teaching the students very rewarding and seeing the improvement in results really made it worth it. I would definitely recommend Ezy Math Tutoring for both prospective clients and fellow tutors as each will benefit greatly from this service. 23rd July 2012

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Castlecrag Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like SHORE - Sydney Church of England Preparatory School, Northbridge.
