The most important thing for a tutor to do is to make the learning process fun and enjoyable. By making the process of learning engaging and rewarding for students a tutor can have a large impact. To begin with, a tutor must encourage a student to do better and learn from previous mistakes. Getting upset/impatient with a student is only going to discourage the student and prevent him/her from reaching potential; and that's the opposite of the desired goal. In addition, confidence has to be built in a student; this way a student will be able…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for students is to listen, which helps us understand their needs and enables us to help them effectively. I also think preparation on a tutor's part is a very important part of the relationship with a student. I would consider myself to be a great listener, which comes in handy in tutoring and I my…

Make sure the student has the right attitude towards studying and enjoying as well. I personally think enjoying what you are doing is the most important. From my experience, It is way easier to learn and memorize the things you like. Forcing the student to do something worsens the attitude and possibly the grade as well. I think my biggest…

I believe effort is the most important thing, regular check ins, solving problems for the student and being able to not only be a tutor but also a friend. Lacking effort to corny especially when I was a tutor made me feel like I wasn’t important and I wasn’t getting my moneys worth. As a tutor I believe I’m able to create a strong connection…

Be patient with them and encourage them to do their best. Consistency is key and results don't just appear overnight, trust the process and at the end all anyone can ask of you is to do your best. Another big thing is to always be honest with them, whether that means admitting that you don't know something (but can find out for them) or letting…

This involves providing encouragement, positive reinforcement, and constructive feedback to help students recognize their strengths and overcome challenges. I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is to provide individualised instruction, as well as a safe and non-judgemental learning environment to student, something that they may not be able to obtain in a normal big-size class with limited time to teach an increasingly information-heavy curriculum. I have been tutoring students…

A tutor plays a pivotal role in a student's development, in both academic growth and personal resilience. Thus, it is essential for a tutor to be a source of support and provide guidance when navigating these…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student involve making the student understand the concepts at a deep level, rather than tutoring them solely for the purpose of achieving higher grades. I believe a good tutor should remove the fear of a subject, if any, from a student's mind and encourage them to learn in more detail, while providing…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is build confidence and spark an interest for learning. I would do this by encouraging a growth mindset and applying school concepts to the real world to show students that school learning does relate to the real world and doesn't just remain in the books. This is something I personally found…

I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

Inside NorthmeadTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lily focused on simplifying fractions and explored equivalent fractions using visual models.

For Year 9, Ethan practised solving quadratic equations by both factorising and completing the square, with extra attention to finding turning points on graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sarah worked through trigonometric functions—drawing their graphs and analysing amplitude and phase shifts—alongside applying radians and unit circle concepts to real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student relied on Desmos for graphing but hesitated to input values or interpret function outputs independently; "more experience with Desmos" was suggested, as he often skipped visual aids and lost confidence when tackling abstract equations.

In a Year 6 maths session, messy working out—especially in multi-digit subtraction—made it hard to spot copying errors or double-check answers, as noted: "she finished her quiz very fast but didn't double check her answers properly and ended up with multiple wrong answers."

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student forgot to complete both sides of assigned homework pages and sometimes arrived without essential materials, leading to incomplete practice and less productive lessons.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Northmead noticed that a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to tackle indices problems is now solving complex questions independently and even tries new strategies without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student has started redoing homework questions she got wrong the first time—something she avoided before—and now checks her answers carefully for mistakes.

In a recent primary session, one student used out-loud thinking to break down tricky addition problems, openly catching and correcting errors on her own, which marks a big shift from staying quiet when unsure.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Wentworthville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Northmead Creative and Performing Arts High School.
