Show that they care. A student may fall in love with the subject if they find that the tutor is passionate about the subject and is focused on getting the best out of the student. Furthermore, understanding that every student learns at a different pace and being flexible with the pace at which they understand while keeping an eye on the deadline…

A tutor must be able to understand the student first, and according to the student, he should be able to change and adapt to the current situation and respond according to the needs of the students, rather than having a constant set of rules or agenda to the way of teaching. I am good at demonstrating concepts in my own way, rather than going in a…

Most important thing would be empathy. A tutor has to put himself/herself in the shoes of the student. Knowing the material in great detail is half the battle won. You also need to have patience and cannot expect all students to have the same speed in learning things. It takes time to build concepts. Brick by brick. You cannot build a wall in one…

A tutor should be patient and identify the best way for a student to learn. Each student has a unique way of learning and understanding things, and it is up to the tutor to guide the student and motivate him/her. I excel in finding ways and techniques to solve problems and answer questions that are easy to comprehend and get used to. This enabled…

A tutor needs to be able to guide students not only through the subject but their educational career as a whole. Tutors should be able to provide general feedback on learning as a whole to their students and should always be ready to support students particularly in harder periods such as the exam period. I have heaps of practice SACs and exams…

A tutor should be extremely caring when it comes to their students. Often, especially kids, are afraid to ask tutors questions at the risk of "sounding dumb". I believe it is the tutor's foremost responsibility to assure the students that learning is for everyone, and they are not alone when facing that doubt. Perseverance, organisation, patience,…

The best thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to understand the student's academic needs and address them in a very professional way. Most of the times, teachers and tutors don't listen to the problems of the individuals in their class and hence those problems often remain unsolved. In my point of view, every student has potential and a…

In my opinion, a maths tutor should create personalized learning plan tailored to the student's unique needs, fostering a positive and supportive learning environment. They should provide consistent feedback, helping students identify their strengths and areas for improvement. A tutor should also teach essential study skills and learning…

1. Make sure they have the encouragement they need. 2. The most important thing is to explain to them why they should take these studies and how it will help them in their future endeavors. 3. Treat students with respect and teach them how to treat others with respect. During my years as a student, I found it difficult to learn stuff very…

I believe that providing a comprehensive understanding is the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student. Often students can develop superficial knowledge of a topic or concept, which may be a successful short-term strategy, however, I believe for the student's long-term interests, it is valuable to ensure students' knowledge is…

Being patient with them and taking care to really listen in order to give honest feedback to the student. They should teach every student differently based on their needs. I consider the most important to be someone who they can always ask questions to without feeling intimidated or pressured. I think that many students struggle with asking questions to teachers as they feel the teacher might think it is a dumb question (mostly when the students get stuck with the basics). I feel that creating an environment where…

According to me the following are the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student: 1. Helping students to achieve their full potential in academics at the same time help with personal development. 2. Giving a different view of a student's life, a bigger perspective on the small world of a high school student 3. Provide guidance…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do is to pay close attention to their student's struggles and needs and tentatively address them. This not only applies for challenging areas of study, but also for general approaches to their learning. Whereas it may be beneficial to build up one student's confidence, another may require more enthusiasm…

Personally, I believe communication is the key. Without it, it's impossible to fully understand a student's needs or where they may be struggling. Communication fosters understanding, which is essential for growth. Therefore, effectively communicating and understanding the student is the most important thing. My greatest strength is the ability to…

We are quite happy with Soumya's work at this stage.

Inside Notting HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Aanya practised telling time using both analog and digital clocks, and worked on identifying symmetrical shapes through hands-on drawing tasks.

Year 10 student Kevin focused on balancing redox equations as well as exploring the differences between galvanic and electrolytic cells using past exam questions.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Sarah completed detailed organic chemistry revision, tackling reaction pathways and structural isomers of homologous series with real VCAA-style problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Chemistry, answers often lacked clear layout and consistent use of units, especially in calculation and equilibrium questions; as one tutor noted, "units need to be shown correctly at all stages of answer." This led to confusion when interpreting formulae or balancing redox equations.

In Year 9 Mathematics, working was sometimes scattered on the page or missing key steps in long division and fraction conversions, making it difficult to check reasoning.

A Year 4 student's homework revealed distraction during lessons, with unfinished word problems and skipped working for time-telling tasks—leaving her unsure how she arrived at each answer.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Notting Hill noticed a Year 11 student who previously rushed through calculation questions now takes a methodical approach, laying out each step clearly and using the correct SI units without reminders.

A Year 8 student, who used to get distracted during lessons, showed much better concentration last week—she was able to work through problems mentally and completed all set tasks without losing focus.

In a recent primary session, a Year 4 student confidently solved fraction addition and multiplication questions independently after struggling with mixed fractions earlier in the term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glen Waverley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pinewood Primary School.
