Establish the appropriate attitude towards studying. A tutor, besides supporting their student academically at the moment, should be able to build the learning culture by stimulating the student's curiosity and appreciation towards the subject and studying as a whole. I'm a good communicator and I can simplify complex concepts in a…

The tutor should be a mentor to their student, finding fulfillment and happiness in their student's success, while ensuring their goals and expectations are adhered to. Any student can find learning material and solutions online, hence to truly make a difference as a tutor it is essential to be encouraging to the student and have a will to work on…

For a student, a tutor can guide them to the right path and be considerate of their views. Being attentive and respectful to their students is another important thing that every tutor must have. I am very patient which is a quality every tutor must have. I listen and understand to the student's questions carefully to help them out. I am also…

I believe, in today's world, the tutors role is changing quickly. With tons of free education material available online, a tutor must provide personal touch for students and improve their learning rate. A tutors job is to make his/her students grasp that knowledge without having to go through the grind of looking for good material. A tutor must…

I believe the most important thing as a tutor is to understand the situation of each student and develop a learning plan based on their needs. It is important to approach each situation with understanding and provide clarity on topics that they find difficult. I am an A grade student throughout high school, so I am knowledgeable in a wide range of…

First of all, teach and guide them. I understand that children know their academics, they just need a guide to show them the right way of approaching these questions. I love math so I love teaching math and I hope I can impart my love for mathematics in my students too. I have been tutoring for a long time so I can say I do have quite a bit of…

Firstly, it's essential to ensure a student's well-being. Mental and emotional health significantly impact performance. So, I prioritize creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable and are in the right mindset to excel. Secondly, understanding the content is at the core of effective tutoring. A tutor should understand a student's struggle and achievements, and be able to bring out the fun in studying to help them in their academic struggles. I also believe that a tutor should encourage their students to see learning material as more than content they can forget after a test but rather as valuable…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is to inspire students through education. The world of education is so vast and enriching, both primary and secondary school is a long journey and for my students to enjoy education rather than drag their feet through the process is one of my biggest hopes and goals. There are endless possibilities…

The most important thing is to be patient and understanding of the student. I believe that in order to teach efficiently, those two core values must be practiced first for the student to truly engage and advance in the learning material. Contrastingly, in a practical sense, the most important thing we can do is to ensure the student understands…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is to understand the type of support needed. Some students require more explanation whereas other students prefer to work with problems to understand what and how they should apply themselves and what they have learnt. This also may change for different topics with the same student; it's about trying…

I think the most important thing, is that you not only teach students. You learn to grow with them, you make sure that your students are able to be successful, and you are a small contributor to that success, but along the way, you grow with them, you understand the way they learn, so that you could learn with them. I think that my strengths, are…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the students' confidence, help them develop problem-solving skills, and create a safe space where they feel supported. A tutor must be adaptable and proactive. They must observe a student's progress and deduce what method they learn best and adjust their teaching accordingly. Maximize their potential for learning and increase their awareness of their own strengths by creating a conducive learning environment (i.e. strength-based approach, encouragement, inquiry-based learning, one-on-one teaching and learning). All these would allow students to gain better understanding of the subjects or theories in a more in-depth…

Inside Notting HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Aanya practised telling time using both analog and digital clocks, and worked on identifying symmetrical shapes through hands-on drawing tasks.

Year 10 student Kevin focused on balancing redox equations as well as exploring the differences between galvanic and electrolytic cells using past exam questions.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Sarah completed detailed organic chemistry revision, tackling reaction pathways and structural isomers of homologous series with real VCAA-style problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Chemistry, answers often lacked clear layout and consistent use of units, especially in calculation and equilibrium questions; as one tutor noted, "units need to be shown correctly at all stages of answer." This led to confusion when interpreting formulae or balancing redox equations.

In Year 9 Mathematics, working was sometimes scattered on the page or missing key steps in long division and fraction conversions, making it difficult to check reasoning.

A Year 4 student's homework revealed distraction during lessons, with unfinished word problems and skipped working for time-telling tasks—leaving her unsure how she arrived at each answer.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Notting Hill noticed a Year 11 student who previously rushed through calculation questions now takes a methodical approach, laying out each step clearly and using the correct SI units without reminders.

A Year 8 student, who used to get distracted during lessons, showed much better concentration last week—she was able to work through problems mentally and completed all set tasks without losing focus.

In a recent primary session, a Year 4 student confidently solved fraction addition and multiplication questions independently after struggling with mixed fractions earlier in the term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glen Waverley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pinewood Primary School.
