I believe a maths tutor should first understand the importance and value of their role in student's life. I promise on coming to tutorials with preparation, listening to students queries and being ready to provide them all the extra help they need to reach the goal. A great tutor can be a role model to a student, so I will always cherish that and…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is help them realise the small learning mistakes commonly made that in my opinion are not useful further in life. Namely, learning my heart or just memorising to blurt out a concept without understanding its core only to score good grades. A Tutor should be able to make the student…

I think the most important thing when tutoring someone is helping them to understand things they struggle with. I would like to be able to help students to improve while also still enjoying maths. I like to find different ways for people to try and understand, if someone cannot understand a concept or problem explaining in a way they can…

The most important thing is that a maths tutor is not only a teacher but also a mentor. A tutor can inspire and enhance students' self-confidence and lead them to achieve their desired academic goals. I am enthusiastic, sympathetic and optimistic. This creates a comfortable and open zone for my students to express their abilities and interests in…

Tutors should always inspire students by communicating the clear passion they have for the topic they are studying. This gives the student impression that the topic being studied is very interesting and means that the student will enjoy learning more. This is especially important for students who seem to have given up some interest in study.…

The most important thing for a maths tutor is not to provide the answer but rather to assist the student in reaching the solution. As a tutor, I will not provide the solution for students or instruct them on assignments. My intention will be to release ideas and process them to attain the correct outcome. Through this method, students will learn…

I think the most important thing a maths tutor can do is provide constant reassurance in their abilities. I feel like a lot of the time when students feel overwhelmed with school work they lose confidence in their ability to answer questions to write an essay. Having a tutor, someone who can guide them, motivate them and assess and improve weak…

The most important thing is to keep calm and listen to them. As a maths tutor you can never lose your calm irrespective of how many times your student makes the same mistake. You might have to repeat yourself hundreds of times, but that shouldn't be a problem. It is important to understand their questions and respond to them accordingly. It is…

It is one thing to help someone get the correct answer, but it is another thing to change student’s outlook. A positive and confident outlook will increase engagement, which means that the student is more likely to start having success even when the tutor is not present. Local Reviews

Henry was very happy with Hayden's style of tutoring. He found him clear and concise in the way he explained methods, and was teaching him the same way his teacher is at school. Whilst I was listening in the background I could hear that Hayden was very encouraging towards Henry which I'm sure gave him some confidence to tackle the next equation. I know that Hayden will leave more and more homework going forward, he was keen to get to know Henry as a person, identify his strengths and weaknesses first.

Inside OakleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Olivia worked through solving quadratic equations and practiced graphing equations, using examples to connect algebraic solutions with their graphical representations.

In Year 11, Harry focused on applying the rational root theorem to polynomials and tackled quartic equations from recent exam questions.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student James completed Math Methods Chapter 7 example problems, emphasizing function analysis and calculus applications relevant to his upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, one student's written work in algebra showed he skipped showing steps, which hid sign errors—this meant time was lost retracing calculations instead of moving forward.

A Year 11 student tackling calculus became distracted during sessions and often left questions incomplete when focus slipped.

For a Year 6 learner, diagrams and tables were sometimes missing or messy, making it hard to track working in worded problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student avoided writing out full solutions for fraction tasks, as noted: "just full working out," resulting in missed marks on tests even when the method was understood.

Recent Achievements

One Oakleigh tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to avoid asking for help now confidently brings up challenging calculus questions at the start of each session, keen to tackle them together.

Another high schooler had been struggling with test mistakes in algebra but has started identifying exactly where she went wrong and correcting her own work before asking for feedback—a real shift from needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who was hesitant with multiplication tables is now reciting them unprompted and focusing for longer stretches during lessons, finishing all assigned problems independently last week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
