I think a good tutor needs to be patient with the student. There are times that the teaching process does not go as smoothly as planned but listening helps better understand the student as well as his point of view. I have my own teaching plan and note for every student. I find myself good at spotting main points that student should focus on and…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. Students who reach out for tutoring often do so because they need or want additional support, meaning it is essential to listen to what the student's goals are, what they may be struggling with, and how they feel they learn best. One of the benefits of tutoring is…

The most important thing would probably be being able to form an understanding of how the student learns, and then being able to adjust lessons according to that. I think also just being patient for that student to have that light bulb moment, and then commending them when they do. In addition, just holding myself somewhat accountable for the…

A tutor plays a very important role in a student's life. A good teacher can put a life long impact on the growth and personality of a student. A tutor can be an inspiration to the student and always be there for him or her not only during the course but even after the course as a mentor for life. My strengths are my ability to explain concepts in…

As a tutor, I believe it is my duty to make sure that students love to learn in general and not just for grades! It is very important to build their learning skills with creativity more than just learning the facts. I can communicate well with students and see eye to eye on difficult topic. The key to a successful tutor-student partnership is instilling confidence in the student, reducing stress, and catering specifically to the needs of the individual. A great tutor doesn't just explain how to get through the work; they listen and encourage students to ask questions so that students recognize that they can succeed even when they…

I believe a good tutor has the ability to transcend their role as a tutor and become a role model for their students. Further, helping a student overcome their fears or challenges for a particular subject is incredibly helpful. I am able to connect with my students and understand their issues from their perspective. This allows me to curate my…

The most prominent thing is to work according to the level of child. For example, some students love to study through animations and some by real world examples and also some by doing practicals or activities. Hence; its the duty of a tutor to find the way of teaching that interacts a student and make it interesting for a child to explore that…

A tutor can make or break a students fervour towards a subject. He can make a concept really easy for students to understand and make confident. A tutor can really make a student love a subject by his way of teaching. I have a good way to go with students and have strong hold of math concepts. I have uniquely ways to make people understand complex…

I think it is crucial that a tutor builds good rapport with their student. They also need to be patient with the student and have good understanding. One of the most important things a tutor can do is to inspire students through education. There are endless possibilities…

The most important thing is to be patient and understanding of the student. I believe that in order to teach efficiently, those two core values must be practiced first for the student to truly engage and advance in the learning material. Contrastingly, in a practical sense, the most important thing we can do is to ensure the student understands…

Give time to the student. Clear doubts if any in their mind. I believe in hierarchical learning of a concept. By breaking the tougher questions into small easier parts, student can understand it better First and…

A tutor must be able to understand the student first, and according to the student, he should be able to change and adapt to the current situation and respond according to the needs of the students, rather than having a constant set of rules or agenda to the way of teaching. I believe that the best thing that a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the self-confidence and self-belief to persevere through any difficulties they may face in their academics. This can be done through the gradual withdrawal of support as the student grows in their skills and confidence. Once the student has established their…

I believe the most important things are to build confidence and foster independence. A tutor's job isn't just to help a student get a better grade on the next test; it's to give them the skills and self-belief to tackle future challenges on their own. This means creating a safe, supportive space where the student feels comfortable asking "silly"…

Inside Oakleigh EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 Dylan worked through a diagnostic quiz and reviewed probability concepts, reinforcing skills with targeted practice on challenging questions.

For Year 11 Parth, recent sessions focused on explaining the effects of changes in the cash rate on aggregate demand and unemployment, as well as developing structured written responses for economics papers covering AD-AS models and Australia's economic goals.

Meanwhile, another Year 11 student tackled market failure topics in Economics—such as externalities and allocative efficiency—using SAC preparation materials and short-answer exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, skipping steps while factorizing led to repeated calculation errors—one tutor observed, "lots of middleman equations left out," which made it harder to spot where mistakes occurred.

In VCE Economics, a student sometimes rushed through multiple choice questions without reading them fully, resulting in missed marks and confusion when tackling earlier topics.

Another senior student's essay responses lacked clear explanations of diagrams and omitted key terminology, especially under time pressure.

These habits meant valuable time was spent reworking answers or clarifying concepts instead of building new skills or gaining confidence with advanced material.

Recent Achievements

One Oakleigh East tutor noticed a Year 12 student who used to rush through written responses now taking time to structure answers clearly, adding more economic terminology and connecting ideas—something he'd struggled with before.

In a recent session with a Year 8 student, the tutor saw them approach tough factorisation problems much more independently; they finished most worksheet questions on their own after needing frequent hints in earlier lessons.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously hesitated to ask for help began raising their hand when stuck, leading to them finishing all ten multiplication questions without errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Amsleigh Park Primary School.
