The most important things a tutor can do are build a student’s confidence, personalize learning to suit their style, and simplify complex concepts to make them understandable. Tutors should foster curiosity, provide a safe, judgment-free space, and empower students to think critically and solve problems independently for long-term success. My…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is giving them the support they need, and pushing them to reach their limits at times. My strength as a tutor is my knowledge and my communication skills. I have studied and gained many achievements throughout my high school. However, I can still understand the challenges students face, to help…

I think the most important aspect as a tutor is to listen to the student and foster independence. They should be able to ask as many questions as possible and make them think and learn about problem solving. I think there are a lot of qualities that go into being a good tutor. A few of the most important skills for the field are patience and…

A tutor can develop a passion of learning in a student so that a student can learn and grow even when the teacher is with the student or not. Its similar to teach a person how to fish instead giving them fish to eat. If student learn how to learn on their own, how to solve problems, and what should be the approach to a problem then it is more than…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, build a student's confidence, and make learning feel approachable rather than intimidating. A good tutor doesn't just teach content, but also encourages students, helps them believe in their abilities, and guides them through challenges patiently. Making…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and cheer on their student, allowing the student to maintain their self esteem even when they are having trouble. My strengths are my patience, dedication, and being able to reframe how I teach something. For example, I may use the student's personal interests to explain a concept and make it…

Other than bringing the best out of a student in terms of subject knowledge, a tutor should be able to relate well with the student and help him/her develop an overall personality. A tutor should ignite a sense of purpose by which the student can make logical decisions in life. With a family of math professionals, topics about how math is inclined…

Provide the student with confidence. I believe the most important role of a tutor is to ensure that the student truly understands the concepts they are learning. While it's important to make tutoring sessions engaging and interactive, the ultimate goal is for the student to leave each session with a clearer understanding that supports their academic progress. To achieve this, it's…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are: (1) being patient and listen to what they actually need help with and not just blatantly providing answers, (2) making sure that they understand what is explained and can be applied to other questions or other scenarios, and (3) help the students enjoy the subject they have trouble with,…

I view the role of a tutor as more of a assistant to the teacher. I main goal for the a tutor is to go in-depth on discussed in the classroom allowing the students to wrap their head around concepts that were once perceived as difficult and challenging. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to impose upon them the enjoyment of the process of learning. A tutor can be skilled, and well educated, but if a student does not enjoy the process of being taught in a manner that which leaves them academically unsatisfied, or frustrated, then their potential is…

One of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is listen. Tutors need to get to know the students, what they are good at and their weaknesses so tutors can help them out the best. Tutors need to have the knowledge to teach students and to make sure students can learn from them efficiently. They should form a deep relationship with students so students are able to trust them with learning. Tutors should…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to offer help which is tailored to the student's specific needs. This is not usually done in classes as teachers have a large number of students and cannot always pitch their lessons at the right level for everybody. A tutor,on the other hand, who works with a small group of students, can…

Inside Oakleigh SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Max worked on measurement, specifically converting between units and identifying types of angles using diagrams.

In Year 8, Chloe tackled algebraic fractions—simplifying and multiplying them—and also reviewed techniques for solving for x in linear equations.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sam focused on speed calculations and practiced converting units of time within real-world word problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student repeatedly needed prompting to continue with long multiplication and rarely wrote out working, making it hard to pinpoint misunderstandings—"he needs constant reminder to do it systematically."

In Year 9 algebra, a lack of confidence meant correct answers were often left unattempted, despite knowing the method.

A Year 4 learner was easily distracted during worded problems, which slowed progress on multi-step division.

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for geometry questions forgot basic angle rules and struggled to explain their reasoning aloud; this made error correction much slower in practice tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Oakleigh South noticed a Year 10 student who previously needed step-by-step help with algebra now solves simple equations on his own, only checking in for reassurance at the end.

In another session, a Year 8 student who used to leave worded problems unfinished has started working through each part methodically and completed all set questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who would often lose focus during longer tasks managed to finish an entire worksheet on area and perimeter accurately after staying engaged for the whole lesson—something he hadn't done before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Warrigal Road Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakleigh South Primary School.
