Inside One MileTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jack practised **division and multiplication** through quick-fire tests and worked on recognising angles using simple diagrams.

In Year 9, Olivia focused on mastering **algebraic equations—especially where she'd struggled before—and revisited Pythagoras' Theorem** with visual aids.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Liam tackled financial maths topics like depreciation and shares, then extended into **lump sum calculations for loans to build real-world problem-solving skills**.

Recent Challenges

A recurring challenge for several high school students has been an over-reliance on formulas without understanding the underlying concepts.

In Year 11 financial maths, one student was "too reliant on putting numbers into a given formula," making it hard to adapt when faced with worded or unfamiliar questions.

Another Year 10 student in algebra tended to skip difficult problems, feeling daunted by abstract topics and defaulting to "I don't know" before attempting an answer.

Across multiple sessions, messy or incomplete working out—especially in geometry and algebra—made it difficult for students to retrace steps or learn from mistakes during revision.

Recent Achievements

A One Mile tutor recently noticed Danika arriving with her homework completed and even highlighting the specific questions she found challenging—something she hadn't done before.

In another session, Liz's willingness to speak up when confused stood out; where she once hesitated, she now openly asks for clarification on tricky financial maths topics and confidently explains her reasoning.

For a younger learner, Lara has started tackling new maths problems by talking through her process aloud instead of waiting for help, showing much more independence than in previous sessions.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We love Jennifer and she is the perfect match for Kittu. Already she has noticeably improved her confidence.

Freya and Lidia get on really well, Lidia is gentle, firm and positive all at the same time which works well for Freya. Freya's confidence is growing already and she did better in her last weekly maths test than she usually does which was a boost for her confidence.

Ranul has been fantastic. Ava seems to have really taken a liking to him which helps!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Tomaree Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Anna Bay Public School.
