A tutor can explain the main concept, however, the related questions must be solved by the student itself as it promotes the concept of self-learning. As an english tutor, I can sometimes unkowingly become their biggest cheerleader and that could really help them overcome any emotional stress that could become a hindrance in their studies.…

In my opinion the most important thing that an english tutor can do for a student is to set the student up in a positive mindset towards learning. This includes encouraging the student to strive in their academic life as well as assist them in understanding methods they can use to seek support in learning different concepts. Being a high school…

A tutor is someone who just not explains what is right or wrong or not or just gives the answer directly, but instead makes sure that the student, one is teaching has understood the concept extremely well and can relate to his or her own work and can work perfectly without the tutor's help. Also, the tutor should be aware how the student works…

Primarily, an english tutor needs to be a good listener. Listen the problems of an individual carefully and provide the solution. Tutor can be a mentor not only of the academic but can be a mentor of other emotional and mental problems. Patience is the baby step to become an effective tutor. Some children might need patience levels that may put me…

A tutor needs to help identify a student's strong points and motivate the students in every possible way. It's not always the tutor that should be valued and respected but the students also needs the same respect and care. Also, an english tutor should know how to boost up the morale of a student when he/she is feeling low. If student is facing…

Give moral support and guidance. As a tutor, I don't give answers or solve the student's work, I want them to be able to solve it themselves and use their critical thinking skills with their knowledge of subject content. Subjects can be tough, as a tutor, I need to find ways to convey the same subject in an easier, convenient way to understand it.…

I believe that in order for anyone to understand the material being taught - the tutor must begin with the fundamentals and basics; breaking down the information and then ensuring the student is able to explain it back is what I believe works best. This requires patience, which I believe is an essential quality a tutor must maintain in order for…

A tutor has to be patient and welcoming for their students. The reason these students come for tutoring is because they face difficulty keeping up with school. So they should be given the space to understand at their own pace, in their own method and a teacher needs to recognize that. We need to recognize the method which we choose to teach a…

Alicia, is softly spoken and paced and this appeals to my teen Rose. Alicia picks up when Rose hasn't understood and works to explain it differently until she does. We are very happy with the confidence Rose has gained in maths & the skills she can now apply at school.

Inside Para HillsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Marley focused on three-digit division with remainders and translating between mixed and proper fractions, using number lines to help visualise concepts.

Year 8 student Sam worked through simplifying fractions and placing them accurately on a number line, while also being introduced to improper and mixed fractions for the first time.

For Year 10, Jess practised solving complex algebraic equations and completed short- and long-form multiplication and division problems from her current maths homework.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student avoided writing out full working when subtracting with borrowing, leading to confusion—he skipped showing steps in subtraction, which hid where he went wrong.

In Year 8, a reluctance to check answers in long division meant repeated errors were not spotted and fixed.

For a senior student revising calculus, notes showed that formulas were often looked up rather than memorised or derived, slowing progress during problem sets.

After making spelling errors on written responses in English (Year 7), over-reliance on autocorrect left gaps in learning; the result was hesitation when composing without digital aids.

Recent Achievements

A Para Hills tutor noticed one Year 10 student who'd previously avoided writing steps in maths now independently writes each stage before calculating answers, which has helped reduce careless errors.

In a recent high school session, another student made a leap with division: after scoring just 40% on an initial worksheet, they practiced times tables and division patterns, then reached 85% accuracy on the next attempt.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who used to guess at the time is now confidently working out "quarter past" and "quarter to" questions aloud without prompts—something that took lots of encouragement earlier in the term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Para Hills Community Hub Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Para Hills School.
