A tutor must be understanding and patient. These students are still learning and can feel embarassed about their slow progress. It is the death of a students learning if they feel too scared to ask questions or go over the same content. A great tutor must understand this and make the student feel comfortable and at ease so they are willing to…

The number one rule that I tutor by is to never give a student an answer. I believe its crucial for the student to work towards an answer with guidance from their tutor, this enables them to learn from their mistakes and understand the process to a solution themselves, rather than being handed the solution on a plate by their tutor. I believe it…

An important thing would be to instil a sense of confidence in a student about a particular subject, theory, or whatever it is that they are struggling with. Without confidence, even if a student may know the content or understand the theory, it can be difficult to do well in that subject. This is achieved by repeating a concept or practising it a…

I did touch on this in my previous answer but I'll say it again because I think it's that important! Encouraging students to love and see the beauty of the subjects they're studying is essential as it serves to catalyse their improvement. I have seen this multiple times in many students. Another equally important facet of tutoring is making sure…

A tutor must help a student develop their knowledge of a subject whilst providing them with the tools to become an independent, inquiring learner so that they can eventually succeed independently. I believe the most important thing is for a tutor to help students ask the right questions in their learning journey, rather than just helping them find…

The most important thing would be to facilitate the student to be able to study and work at the subject more effectively and efficiently in their own time. My strenghts would be that I achieve good grades and am passionate about the subjects I study, so would be very eager to help others in those areas. My biggest weakness at the moment would be…

The most important thing is to engage with the student. It is more beneficial for the student and tutor to work together and be open to new ideas or methods to tackle questions. Instead of the tutor forcing the student to use one method, engaging with the student will lead to the most effective way to solve the question and will lead to successful…

I take offence that students aren't given an insight into the immense art and beauty that goes behind mathematics. I take priority in showing students the history behind the math they study. I always put emphasis on proofs, a failure to do so usually means a bad start to university. At the end of each tutorial, it is imperative that the tutor…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build not only a survey-able understanding of the topic, but hopefully a genuine interest and passion. This might not be realistic 100% of the time, but creating actual curiosity and interest beyond just completing work out of necessity can not only be highly rewarding for the student but will…

University of Melbourne, Bachelor of Commerce, 91.6 ATAR. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide encouragement in their learning journey. The tutor has to look at problems/concepts from the students point of view which requires a good relationship between tutor and student. There also needs to be a strong element of trust such that the student feels comfortable to let the tutor know if they don’t understand a concept or would like an explanation to be repeated. The tutors main…

Help them grow a passion for the subject so that they’re not just learning it for the sake of doing it but they may actually find a future long term love for the subject. Inside ParkvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Max built confidence with column addition and subtraction, then moved on to identifying odd and even numbers and describing fractions like halves and quarters using visual aids.

Year 5 student Emily practiced long multiplication, including multiplying two-digit numbers, and learned to convert between improper and mixed fractions by representing them on number lines.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Josh focused on perimeter calculations for composite rectilinear shapes and consolidated understanding of area through grid-based problems before tackling worded questions involving mass and different units.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student struggled to recall subtraction methods and the reasons behind odd/even numbers when put on the spot, as a tutor observed: "she was unable to recall the exact methods of adding and subtracting, and the reason behind concepts of odd and even." This gap showed up especially during in-lesson questions without homework reinforcement.

In Year 7 mathematics, long division remained a stumbling block; confusion persisted after repeated attempts, particularly when switching between strategies or times tables were skipped. Without consistent written practice at home, these foundational processes often faded between lessons—leaving students unsure mid-task or reverting to less effective approaches under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A Parkville tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who, after weeks of hesitation, finally started writing down her own instructions for homework—she used to rely on verbal prompts but now wants reminders she can check herself.

In Year 11 maths, one student who always struggled with worded multiplication and division problems is now independently tackling them using arrays and can explain his reasoning out loud without guessing.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4, who previously avoided symmetry exercises, surprised the tutor by completing both sides of a symmetry drawing accurately during the session and even asked for an extra challenge.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kathleen Syme Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like University High School.
