To help a student walk the right path that he/she desires. A tutor should understand a students passion and dream and help them achieve this dream. Acknowledging one's own failure and encouraging students to learn from his/her mistakes rather than losing hope. Student needs to understand why they are smothered with all this education, the reason…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. I think we sometimes forget how big of a difference it makes when someone believes they can actually do it. I really try to celebrate the small wins — whether they’ve just understood a tough concept or even…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to let the students enjoy and appreciate the lesson. Only then, they will be able to understand and excel in the subjects. I am really good at identifying the difficulty that a student face and guide him or her on how he can overcome the situation. Many a times, students are not meeting his…

I believe a tutor has to make sure that students fully understand the material they are learning so that they can apply what they learn and ultimately be able to do the more difficult questions by themselves. With constant practice and drilling, students will be more comfortable doing the questions themselves and be confident in the…

Motivating them is probably the most important, as students can be brilliant but fall behind quickly if they do not have the drive to improve. I think that a tutor also needs to have multiple different ways of approaching a question as a student might not be able to grasp a particular one. Furthermore, I believe that generically working through…

Make them feel comfortable enough to ask any kind of questions and the aim is that they feel confident in problem solving and tackling unfamiliar problems with ease. My students always have so much fun in my classes. I think it is important, because when students are enjoying themselves in the learning process, it makes it so much easier to learn. Be their friend and role model. Students have already enough to deal with in school. They need someone to listen to them and help them to clarify all their doubts. In a nutshell, I think a tutor must be : --> A friend --> An academic trainer --> A mentor --> A planner As a tutor, i focus more on an overall development than just focusing on the…

I think a tutor should have at least some level of personal connection with the student. A tutor should always motivate students to try their hardest, and also engage them into the subject as much possible. Instead only focus on academic results, study ability and habit is more important. Tutors can only help students in school time to support their study, anything beyound school and further into the society needs student's own capabilities. These capabilities are crucial to their personal success. In my opinion, the following question reflects the…

Inside PetershamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack worked on algebra word problems and probability, applying these skills to real-life scenarios.

In Year 4, Harry focused on solving multiplication questions and was introduced to number sequences for pattern recognition.

Meanwhile, Kyah (Year 6) revised perimeter concepts and practised converting between millimetres, centimetres, and kilometres while reading maps for her homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, a student's written work was often unclear, making it hard to trace errors and slowing progress in algebra. As one tutor noted, "the way she sets out her work will greatly improve her understanding and reduce errors."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student working on essays tended to overcomplicate arguments instead of building ideas step by step; this led to confusion mid-way through responses.

For a primary student in Year 4, loss of focus at the start of lessons meant new concepts like time or division took longer to grasp, even after warm-up activities.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Petersham noticed Emily now tells her tutor when she's stuck instead of staying quiet—last session, she worked through tricky area problems independently after asking for help.

Jason (Year 10) has started tackling unfamiliar maths questions on his own; although confused at first, he finished the lesson answering new concepts without support.

In Year 4, Zoe previously hesitated to participate but recently completed multiplication questions independently and stayed focused much longer than before. At the end of that lesson, she answered every problem on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanmore Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Petersham Public School.
