Showing you genuinely care and are there for them as much as possible. Not just limiting your services to that one session but ensuring a holistic approach and building strong rapport. It’s not teacher vs student, is student and student working together towards a common goal: to help improve your student’s academic wellbeing. - Flexibility,…

I think the key thing a tutor can do for a student is ensure that their individual learning habits are in order, creating an essential degree of independence. I have found it extremely valuable to ensure students develop a solid work ethic and understand how they can study effectively. In this sense tutoring plays a supplementary role, ensuring…

I can build my students engagement with and appreciation of the subject (many students find school boring or purposeless and I make a point to spark more joy in learning by integrating key notes of relevance into every lesson). I will also assure students that it is okay not to understand something, or to feel unconfident. Struggling with…

The most important thing I can do for a student is to build their confidence and independence in learning. Beyond just solving problems or improving grades, my goal is to help students truly believe in their own abilities. Many students struggle not because they lack potential, but because they doubt themselves. I work to change that. By…

Be their friend and role model. Students have already enough to deal with in school. They need someone to listen to them and help them to clarify all their doubts. In a nutshell, I think a tutor must be : --> A friend --> An academic trainer --> A mentor --> A planner As a tutor, i focus more on an overall development than just focusing on the…

I think most importantly, a tutor must create a good learning environment for their students. We've been through high school aswell and we've seen the ups and downs. So the best thing a tutor can do is be patient and supportive and build their confidence. Even if they get a question wrong or don't understand something, we should be patient and…

The most important thing is NOT teaching knowledge, instead, is to give insights and inspire students. Furthermore, is not teaching student some insights on a specific problem, but in general. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel capable. It’s not just about explaining the material, it’s about creating an environment where they feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. A great tutor doesn’t just help improve grades; they help build confidence, independence, and a mindset that says,…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to foster independent thinking and create a safe space for questions. Give the student the foundational skills to excel on the own once outside of tutoring. A good tutor will be able to get their student to a level where they feel competent to work by themselves, and know both how to solve a problem, and why we approach the problem the way we do. My strengths as a tutor is my relatability, as math didn’t come easy…

I think a tutor should have at least some level of personal connection with the student. A tutor should always motivate students to try their hardest, and also engage them into the subject as much possible. Inside PetershamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack worked on algebra word problems and probability, applying these skills to real-life scenarios.

In Year 4, Harry focused on solving multiplication questions and was introduced to number sequences for pattern recognition.

Meanwhile, Kyah (Year 6) revised perimeter concepts and practised converting between millimetres, centimetres, and kilometres while reading maps for her homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, a student's written work was often unclear, making it hard to trace errors and slowing progress in algebra. As one tutor noted, "the way she sets out her work will greatly improve her understanding and reduce errors."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student working on essays tended to overcomplicate arguments instead of building ideas step by step; this led to confusion mid-way through responses.

For a primary student in Year 4, loss of focus at the start of lessons meant new concepts like time or division took longer to grasp, even after warm-up activities.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Petersham noticed Emily now tells her tutor when she's stuck instead of staying quiet—last session, she worked through tricky area problems independently after asking for help.

Jason (Year 10) has started tackling unfamiliar maths questions on his own; although confused at first, he finished the lesson answering new concepts without support.

In Year 4, Zoe previously hesitated to participate but recently completed multiplication questions independently and stayed focused much longer than before. At the end of that lesson, she answered every problem on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanmore Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Petersham Public School.
