I would say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping them grow as individuals, and help them find a love for learning - a strong passion for the academic studies. A tutor needs to also serve as a good role model for the students, and be a person the student can trust to help them improve their grades. I would say my…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is the ability for the student to develop a independent style of learning and facing adversities with a strategy in mind. This allows the student to not only develop academically but also fosters a lifestyle of learning that will help them transition into high education. I am clear,…

Tutoring is a form of specialised teaching, and two-way communication is fundamental to successful teaching. It is easy to talk at a child to teach them a concept on a basic level, but patience, asking the child questions and listening to their responses effectively are essential elements in ensuring the student understands the content. From many…

Apart from the primary purpose of a tutor to improve a student's academic marks, I believe a tutor play a significant role in developing self-confidence and helping the student reach their academic potential. Being able to relate and convey information effectively to a student is an important skill for tutors to possess. As a student, they already have teachers who supply the material, and parents who remind them to study, but as a tutor, our job is to be a guide, and friend and offer help according to each of their individual needs. Another valuable…

The most important thing a tutor can do is, instead of working through curriculum blindly and wasting time, teaching content that is personalised and caters to the student to improve their weaknesses and boost them academically. My strengths as a tutor are nitpicking what a student's weaknesses are and creating content catered to them to improve…

Help support the student so that tutoring does not become another point of stress for the student. When I was tutored years ago I found that when the tutor listened to be and walked me through things at my pace was when I felt that the tutoring was the most effective. Patience and listening to the students needs. I have had teachers and parents who would get easily frustrated and that can greatly affect a student's confidence. Building a students confidence is integral in the learning process. Also I feel that each course should be focused around the students own personal needs. Text book teaching/tutoring, I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them understand the subject itself, and the skills it requires, as this is what seems to be holding back most students from achieving good grades. My strengths are the fact that I enjoy teaching and will have a lot of patience in aiding students along their path, as many of the…

The most important thing is to motivate to them so that they want to learn, instead of thinking that studying is just for the sake of having good results in school. This will help in the long run, as one should never stop learning. I am able to guide my students by having different ways of explaining things if they don't understand at first and to…

Content Covered

Year 9 student Noah focused on measurement conversions and practiced algebra questions to boost calculation speed.

Year 10 student Hayden tackled advanced algebra involving order of operations with exponents, alongside percentage calculations done without a calculator, and began learning key definitions from the upcoming Year 11 Maths syllabus.

For Elloise in Year 9, lessons targeted division skills without a calculator as well as building confidence with multi-step algebra problems, ensuring solid understanding before her next test.

Recent Challenges

Several process-related habits impacted progress across year levels.

In upper primary, a Year 5 student repeatedly avoided writing out working in division and powers, leading to simple errors; as noted, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In Year 7–8 Maths, homework was often left incomplete or not attempted at all—during test preparation this meant missed chances to consolidate core skills and review feedback.

For a Year 10 student, confidence lapses after mistakes caused hesitation before answering the next question during exam-style practice. The pause grew with each uncertainty, quietly eating into valuable test time.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Piara Waters noticed one Year 8 student who used to rush through maths problems is now carefully showing all working, leading to fewer errors and clearer answers.

Another high schooler has shifted from using physical tools for learning area and volume to independently applying formulas during practice questions—something they previously struggled with unless prompted.

Meanwhile, a primary student who would hesitate to ask for help now regularly stops the lesson to clarify tricky worded questions before moving on, finishing a full set of division tasks without needing extra guidance this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Amherst Village Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Riva Primary School.
