From my tutoring experience, I understand that many students are not necessarily incapable of doing maths - they just may be struggling to fit the mould of the teaching system or their approach to problems differ greatly to their teachers'. I believe it is extremely important to understand each student's process of thinking and how they can adapt…

A tutor should be able to boost a student's confidence by providing them with the relevant knowledge needed to do well in their tests and exams. It is also important for the tutor to be compassionate with the students. I am compassionate with the students as I am willing to explain difficult topics until they understand without getting frustrated.…

The tutor can guide the student when they are facing difficulties. It is not the tutor's job to answer questions for the student, but rather to help the student make sense of how to solve a problem. I have a background in mathematics, both in my undergrad and as my Masters. I have experience answering questions in Course Hero, where I have an 80%…

I think it is extremely important for a tutor to be adaptable. Different students have differing learning styles and needs, and therefore, to help different students, you need to be able to tailor your tutoring to individualised approaches. Furthermore, rather than just giving the children the answers, as a tutor it is important to be able to help…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to continuously encourage regardless of the results they get. Guide them and help them build their confidence as they learn. To a degree, that allows them to then learn on their own and become independent. I'm usually very good at identifying what my students don't…

Understand their way of learning, and adjusting to the student to accomodate them. I have had multiple experiences where my tutor would try to teach their method and force that method upon me. I think the most important is to help a student feel confident in their intelligence, and in themselves. I needed a tutor in some subjects growing up, and it can feel bad to be “behindâ€Â. For me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure effective learning. Inside PlentyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 Emily practised finding surface area and volume of complex 3D shapes, then reviewed key geometry concepts in preparation for her measurement test.

In Year 11, Indie focused on polynomials and differentiation techniques to consolidate understanding before a major maths assessment.

For Year 12, recent sessions with Jack involved estimating the area under curves using integration and revisiting logarithms alongside circular functions through worked examples and discussion.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, one student hesitated to attempt complex differentiation questions, expressing "difficulty in solving complex Algebra expressions," which led to gaps when tackling multi-step problems.

In Year 8, panic during timed assessments resulted in a lower score than expected; as noted, "panic under time constraints (possibly due to not being so confident?) might be the cause."

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student often doubted her correct answers and avoided attempting worded problems without reassurance. This uncertainty slowed progress on application tasks and meant she sometimes left parts of assignments incomplete during sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Plenty tutor noticed a real shift with Indie (Year 11), who, after missing classes, not only caught up on complex differentiation topics but came prepared to sessions with specific questions and managed to solve her own Logarithms problems once discussion began—previously she would have waited for step-by-step help.

In Year 10, Ryan quickly recalled prior years' concepts and confidently tackled new gradient and intercept problems he used to find confusing.

Meanwhile, Emily in Year 6 has started recognizing her own small errors in linear graph drawing between sessions, correcting them herself without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Diamond Valley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Thomas the Apostle School.
