Its good to be able to use a formula or understand how mathematical theories work but if you do not understand the fundamental blocks of which that concept is built on you will not be getting very far. Thats why I believe in not only understanding what a formula does but why it works. My ability to find where the problem is in a student and…

I consider the most important role of a maths tutor is to grow students confidence in subjects via encouragement. In order to strengthen students knowledge and abilities, a tutor should ensure that the student believes they can improve their understanding of a subject and trusts that their extra effort does pay off. I think one of the most important things a maths tutor can do is help a student build confidence. Being an inspirational character. A tutor has to encourage his/her students always. During a semester/course, there will be certain times when students will lose interests for a poor mark (may be), or a personal problem. A tutor can't force a student to complete a session because it has to! A friendly approach can be helpful sometimes as well.…

Build their confidence. Every student is different. One cannot treat them on the same plain. Some are aware of their shortcomings and are just confused. Some are hardworking while others can be smart-workers or differently remarked. A tutor must recognise that talent in them and help them use it in growing. Explaining instances metaphorically…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do is to provide an interesting learning experience for the student such that they are motivated towards studying. That could be done by providing a lot of real-life examples where these complex mathematical concepts are used. In the end, if you can build up a student who is self-motivated towards…

Inside PlentyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 Emily practised finding surface area and volume of complex 3D shapes, then reviewed key geometry concepts in preparation for her measurement test.

In Year 11, Indie focused on polynomials and differentiation techniques to consolidate understanding before a major maths assessment.

For Year 12, recent sessions with Jack involved estimating the area under curves using integration and revisiting logarithms alongside circular functions through worked examples and discussion.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, one student hesitated to attempt complex differentiation questions, expressing "difficulty in solving complex Algebra expressions," which led to gaps when tackling multi-step problems.

In Year 8, panic during timed assessments resulted in a lower score than expected; as noted, "panic under time constraints (possibly due to not being so confident?) might be the cause."

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student often doubted her correct answers and avoided attempting worded problems without reassurance. This uncertainty slowed progress on application tasks and meant she sometimes left parts of assignments incomplete during sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Plenty tutor noticed a real shift with Indie (Year 11), who, after missing classes, not only caught up on complex differentiation topics but came prepared to sessions with specific questions and managed to solve her own Logarithms problems once discussion began—previously she would have waited for step-by-step help.

In Year 10, Ryan quickly recalled prior years' concepts and confidently tackled new gradient and intercept problems he used to find confusing.

Meanwhile, Emily in Year 6 has started recognizing her own small errors in linear graph drawing between sessions, correcting them herself without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Diamond Valley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Thomas the Apostle School.
