A tutor should be able to teach their students in an interesting manner, and be more personal. For me I had a tutor in mathematics in grade 6 and he was almost like a friend (and motivated me to enjoy maths myself), I don't think tutors need to be exactly like teachers as students already have to deal with them at school. Most importantly a tutor…

Be supportive and patient understanding everyone learns at a different pace and ways. Also, acknowledging that some content is more difficult than others to some people and that is fine. Just to ensure the student that it is ok to struggle with certain things, we all do at the end of the day. I adapt easily. I always study my student so I can…

Then, my objective became to teach students how to learn properly: my aim was to assist them in finding their own way of studying and learning. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to clear the concepts. If a student knows the concept well then he/she can apply it to any problem pertaining to a particular topic. A tutor can do this by giving real world examples and discussing about the topic in general. Math is one of the most fun subjects to learn if one understands…

I believe that when the right tutor is paired with the right student, they can help the student to understand the pleasure of academic subjects. Inside PrahranTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Ava focused on applying the Pythagorean Theorem to word problems and practiced unit conversions for measurement, including using conversion prefixes.

In Year 9, Nicholas worked through negative integers and reviewed fraction concepts, while also tackling algebraic skills like solving single-variable equations and simplifying expressions.

For Year 11, Ben prepared for an upcoming probability test by analyzing tree diagrams and completed exam revision covering parabolas and key syllabus topics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student sometimes "guessed what to do next" in algebra instead of logically working through each step, which led to avoidable errors when negative numbers appeared.

In a senior session, forgetting to bring completed homework meant valuable time was spent reconstructing past work rather than tackling new challenges.

For a Year 10 trigonometry task, "relying too heavily on formulas" without understanding when or why to use them caused confusion on non-standard problems.

As one tutor noted, "skipping steps made mistakes with + and – harder to catch."

Neatness in written solutions often lagged behind verbal reasoning, especially during revision.

Recent Achievements

A Prahran tutoring session saw a Year 10 student finally nail SOH CAH TOA, now manipulating trig equations independently after struggling to set them up on her own.

One high schooler earned full marks on a quiz—word problems included—when last term he hesitated with multi-step solutions and often skipped them altogether.

Another secondary student who used to quietly guess at answers has started speaking up about learning strategies, even offering feedback mid-session.

This week, a younger student completed her entire practice paper before the lesson and came prepared with specific questions she'd written down herself.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We're very happy with Shaun, he's a lovely young man and has surely helped Fergus with his learning.

Everything has been going well  - Isabella is very happy with her tutor and scheduling tutorials and communication with him has been no problem at all.  We would highly recommend him to other students.

Daniel is great and established a good relationship with James from day one.  That's the first part of the battle! We are now looking forward to James getting more confidence and mathematical skill over the remainder of this year.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Prahran / Windsor Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Prahran High School.
