A lot of students have the preconception that math is impossible and unenjoyable. If you can unlock a students joy for mathematical thinking and problem solving, than half the job is done. Mainly the ability to convey complicated mathematical concepts in a clear concise and (maybe most importantly) enjoyable…

The tutor has so many key responsibilities and actions to do. As he/she needs to aware that individuals are understanding, there should be effective communication, setting realistic goals, creating a supportive environment and also providing them a constructive feedback. I am good in teaching and received very good compliment from my colleagues…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient. Never give up on students. Some students may be fairly poor in understanding certain difficult topics and terms, but the teacher or tutor is responsible to try every possible way to let the student understand the concept. I try to make my tutoring methods fun. I would say I…

For me it is important for tutor to be able to encourage and make the student enjoy learning. Because in order for students to learn faster, they would need to be willing to digest the new knowledge and information given by the tutor. Furthermore, it is important for tutor to look at a problem from many different perspective, because one point of…

I am really patient when dealing with students. I love answering questions from them, and I love to see their face exploring things that they…

I believe that creating a safe space where the child is comfortable enough to ask as many questions as they need is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Patience, admitting if I don't know content (and then researching it for next time), time management skills, the ability to re-explain concepts in different…

In addition to teaching academic knowledge, tutors need to point out directions for students and divide difficult tasks into steps to cultivate students' problem-solving ability. A tutor should always seek to understand a students' capabilities and limitations first, before anything. A tutor should also always try to make learning fun and engaging for the student. Examples include bright visuals, kinematics and learning journeys. Lastly, a tutor should always seek to learn together with the student, an underlying…

Giving a student enough time to get understand something. This could mean waiting for a student to attempt a question and ask for help, instead of helping them right away. Waiting gives the student a sense of independence and a confidence boost when they have done a question correctly themselves. I make sure to adapt to the way a child learns…

I believe the 3 most important things a tutor can do for a student is: 1. being fluent with the content, 2. giving moral support when necessary and 3. create a sort of friendship with the student. With one to one teaching a tutor can help a student on a deeper level than in a classroom setting, allowing them to feel they can ask about anything they're not sure on without any fear of the rest of the class judging them. Inside PrahranTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Ava focused on applying the Pythagorean Theorem to word problems and practiced unit conversions for measurement, including using conversion prefixes.

In Year 9, Nicholas worked through negative integers and reviewed fraction concepts, while also tackling algebraic skills like solving single-variable equations and simplifying expressions.

For Year 11, Ben prepared for an upcoming probability test by analyzing tree diagrams and completed exam revision covering parabolas and key syllabus topics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student sometimes "guessed what to do next" in algebra instead of logically working through each step, which led to avoidable errors when negative numbers appeared.

In a senior session, forgetting to bring completed homework meant valuable time was spent reconstructing past work rather than tackling new challenges.

For a Year 10 trigonometry task, "relying too heavily on formulas" without understanding when or why to use them caused confusion on non-standard problems.

As one tutor noted, "skipping steps made mistakes with + and – harder to catch."

Neatness in written solutions often lagged behind verbal reasoning, especially during revision.

Recent Achievements

A Prahran tutoring session saw a Year 10 student finally nail SOH CAH TOA, now manipulating trig equations independently after struggling to set them up on her own.

One high schooler earned full marks on a quiz—word problems included—when last term he hesitated with multi-step solutions and often skipped them altogether.

Another secondary student who used to quietly guess at answers has started speaking up about learning strategies, even offering feedback mid-session.

This week, a younger student completed her entire practice paper before the lesson and came prepared with specific questions she'd written down herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Prahran / Windsor Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Prahran High School.
