Help them gain a thorough understanding of concepts that they are incapable of doing alone, I want the student to understand that academic marks is not what we are trying to achieve but more of the effort and interest that they put in the subject which will lead towards success a process that needs to be taken instead of chasing the 90 + target…

The obvious impact is to help them learn and understand the concepts covered in class as well as practice vital skills in preparation for them. I also believe that it is a tutors role to create a safe, respectful environment, built on mutual understanding and without judgement. The effective tutor aims way beyond just being a good tutor. It is essential tutors always point out the good achievements of students as much as they make note of their mistakes. Providing encouragement should go beyond the work completed in lessons and a tutor should often check in on how students are coping and provide positive encouragement…

Successful tutors build strong, personal relationships with their students: Tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and…

A tutor must be able to not simply teach a subject but also create a desire for learning and must be able to do both to effectively teach. I also think that a tutor should be able to build on previously known concepts by the student and be able to articulate ideas in different ways to enhance their understanding of a topic. My strengths lie in my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide specific help to the student that caters to their needs, tutors I encountered in the past would provide the same work to each student regardless of skill level or questions. This is a simple thing, but providing catered specific tutoring help and work is fundamental to tutoring…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is really listen to what they have to say and be patient. Some students may have the right idea in essence but not the right answer. Tutors can do so much for students. To choose a few, a tutor should be honest and always try their best to educate and assist the student to their best capacity. Moreover, allowing the student to be okay with failing and making mistakes as part of the journey without feeling ashamed is critical to building their self-confidence and understanding…

Inside PrairiewoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Emily worked on equations involving algebraic expressions and fractions, as well as mean, median, mode and interpreting dot plots in data.

Year 8 student Emily focused on the distance formula and midpoint formula, then moved to gradient calculations using both formulas and graphs.

Year 9 student Emily tackled financial mathematics by calculating weekly wages and overtime pay, followed by understanding income tax and net versus gross pay.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often arrived late and unprepared for lessons, which meant valuable time was spent recapping missed content rather than moving forward.

"She sometimes isn't paying attention to the lesson," a tutor observed during algebra revision, resulting in gaps that made new material harder to grasp.

In Year 11 Legal Studies, forgetting to bring notes or not revising earlier topics led to confusion when trying to link recent cases with legal principles.

Missed homework in Year 10 Maths left methods half-remembered, so key steps were forgotten on tests—especially when under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Prairiewood tutor noticed a Year 9 student who had been hesitant to ask for help now regularly speaks up when confused, making it easier for her to grasp trickier maths topics like equations involving fractions.

In another high school session, a student initially struggled with law reform concepts but by the end could explain key cases in detail, even bringing in her own researched examples.

Meanwhile, a primary student who previously mixed up times tables is now reciting them smoothly each week and completed all ten multiplication problems without errors during the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Wetherill Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mary MacKillop Catholic College.
