A tutor's role is to help students understand key concepts and apply them confidently, leading to growth in both understanding and academic performance. Ultimately, though, I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is help students develop confidence in their own abilities and nurture a genuine curiosity and love of learning that…

Tutors can support other educators to help students learn how to learn. 1-on-1 support can help shed light on the exact nature of any obstacles a student might experience, which might be missed in a group classroom setting. Leading students patiently through the learning process helps instil confidence. I've received multiple feedback from…

First of all, transpositional thinking is really important. For students, they're the first time to learn some concepts while tutors have been dealing with the same concepts for at least several years. So a tutor must think from a student's perspective to find a better way to teach students. Secondly, a tutor should be able to check students'…

I have been teaching math for many years, and I have worked with students of varying skill levels. I encourage all of my students to solve problems based on real-life examples, and I help them explain their solutions in their own words. This approach helps them tackle any type of problem they may face and develop a deeper appreciation for the…

The most important thing is to gain a core understanding of the topic, and not just a surface level rote learning of how to solve problems. It's also important to have an understanding of each student and to recognise when to push them and when they've hit a wall (mentally). I think my greatest strength is my approachability and flexibility. I do…

To allow the student the chance to critically think about the problem, and give help and hints when needed. I believe it is important for students to learn the ability to think for themselves first rather than relying on the tutor to just give them answers. It is more important to teach students the process of learning and figuruing out problems…

I don't mind going the extra mile for my students; whether it is the last-minute doubts before an exam or trying to teach according to the needs of different learners. I am understanding and approachable. I know it is hard to grasp…

The most important thing for a tutor to do is to know what not to do.Never should a tutor discourage any participation or disapprove of the theories initiated by the student. Tutors must be approachable and patient as well as enjoy teaching. Bringing good energy be it online or in person is definitely vital for kids to learn. Helping develop adaptability and time-management skills. Encouraging independent and critical thinking. Improving a student's overall attitude towards…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student are: - Showing empathy and support (sharing one's own experience as a past student from a perspective of strength, resilience and learning) - Promoting empowerment - this means not doing questions for a student, but engaging them in shared decision-making about working through…

Listen to what the student has to say, and base their teaching strategy around their individual needs. If the tutor doesn’t listen to a student or understand their struggles with certain areas, how could the tutor expect good results from their student? I believe I am very clear and concise with what I teach, and that because of my openly…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student isn't to remove the obstacles that hold them back, but to convince them that they can remove them themselves. I am good at adapting how I explain things. One of my issues with many of my teachers was that they would only teach their material in one way, the issue of teaching a whole class…

I think the most important thing you can do as a teacher is to equip your students with the means to learn. There are skills to learn anything. As a teacher, you need to teach your students knowledge as well as show them how to learn. Once students have mastered the method of learning and at the same time gained the confidence to learn, they can…

A quality, which I believe tutors should give their students is confidence. The key to mastering any formula or topic is being confident enough to put oneself forward and try it. After all, we cannot find out their strengths or weaknesses without giving a question a shot. A tutor can improve their student’s confidence through repeated practice,…

The most important thing to keep in mind when tutoring in my opinion is to help them gain confidence & enjoyment in the subject. If a student believes they are bad at a subject, they often won't try as hard because they view it as pointless. Confirmation bias can also lead to only noticing when they make mistakes, meaning they won't recognise the…

As much as wanting to share my knowledge and experience, as a previous and current student myself I also wish that students who find mathematics is a challenging subject would be able to overcome it and learn how it can be a fun subjects once they understand it. very happy with the tutor I have for my daughters. Ezy-math obviously employ top notch tutors. I cannot fault the girl we have, she has a natural ability for teaching and does it in a way that my daughters readily understand. Well worth the money as my daughters marks in both Mathematics and Chemistry have vastly improved.

Inside Princes HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Mila focused on adding and subtracting decimals as well as solving fraction problems using number lines.

For Year 9, Liam worked through quadratic equations—factoring, graphing parabolas, and translating their positions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby practised statistics by creating box plots and calculating mean and standard deviation from real data sets.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student showed reluctance to write out answers for trend analysis in graph questions—"sometimes reluctant in describing the trends (which I'm sure he knows but too tired to write them down)"—leading to incomplete responses.

A Year 11 student struggled with submitting assessments on time, missing deadlines and sometimes not attempting all required tasks.

In a Year 4 session, a child forgot their textbook, which limited progress during tutoring.

Another senior student relied heavily on hints for advanced problems rather than trying multiple strategies first, often pausing whenever a new method was introduced.

Recent Achievements

One Princes Hill tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to rush through questions is now carefully writing down every step when solving quadratics, leading to fewer errors and quicker solutions.

In a recent session with a Year 9 student, the tutor saw real improvement as she started tackling worded fraction problems independently—something she hesitated with before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who once waited for prompts has begun asking thoughtful questions about upcoming topics, showing new initiative in her learning. Last week, she asked to try material ahead of her class for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brunswick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Princes Hill Secondary College.
