You must be adaptable, and change according to how each student acts since every individual is very distinct, this will help cater to their differences (such as learning speed). Must also remember to leave no one student behind and pick them up when they fail, help them learn from their mistakes. I am very considerate and patient, thus able to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide individualized support that meets the student's needs and helps them achieve their academic goals. This involves building a strong rapport, identifying strengths and weaknesses, providing clear explanations, encouraging critical thinking, offering constructive feedback, and being…

Instead only focus on academic results, study ability and habit is more important. Tutors can only help students in school time to support their study, anything beyound school and further into the society needs student's own capabilities. These capabilities are crucial to their personal success. In my opinion, the following question reflects the…

Patience and not comparing them with the others. I believe that each student has their own pace of learning. Lack of patience and comparing them with others will certainly hamper their learning process and will give them less confidence on their studies. Understanding the most effective way of learning for each student is also crucial. When I was…

I have always felt the most important thing to do for them is to - rid them of the fear of that subject and making them self sufficient. I study pure mathematics in university , because I see a certain kind of beauty in natural sciences , therefore tend to bring my student to appreciate the language of the universe in a light they probably…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is adapt to suit their needs. Whilst many tutors can simply pass on content, a strong tutor is capable of teaching content in a way that suits the learning needs of a student. This may include using different communication methods, teaching at different paces and understanding the students…

Communication, patience, understanding. Clearly explaining the topic with either simple or appropriate terms depending on the student's level. As someone who studied on three different continents (Europe, North America, and Australia) I can recognize different types of learners and I utilize it to reach the full potential of the students. Once again I think it is very important for the tutor to explain why a step is being used rather than just teaching them to blindly memorize the process. I am very keen on understanding the steps of solving a problem, so I believe that being able to teach the why helps significantly improve understanding the…

the most important thing a tutor can do is to be understanding. People learn at different paces and ways, you have to understand and connect with your student. Do not berate them and always encourage them. While I don't have any experience as a formal tutor, I believe you should be understanding and welcoming. By this I mean, that you should…

Tutors should build on the foundations of a lesson. The proverb holds true: "If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime." We're giving students the tools necessary not to just answer the question, but to be able to have the knowledge and wisdom to apply those tools to other challenges…

I think understanding that every kid is different and special in their own way, and they have their own needs and methods of approaching problems is very important. To help a student walk the right path that he/she desires. A tutor should understand a students passion and dream and help them achieve this dream. As a tutor the best thing to do for the student is to be patient, resilient and adaptable. I think the most important thing to understand as a tutor is that different students think differently. Certain students will naturally have more or less affinity to different subjects, but also different ways of learning. Trying to figure out which way to best teach requires understanding which way students are best able to learn. For instance,…

Inside PyrmontTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Poppy focused on dividing numbers using long division and began working with dividing decimals.

In Year 9, Tia tackled ratios and rates, practising real-world problem sets and reinforcing key methods for unit conversions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Daniel worked through differentiation using the product rule and explored more challenging trigonometric function questions to deepen understanding ahead of assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12, a student who was fully capable with application questions lost marks under exam pressure—timed conditions disrupted her usual accuracy and confidence ("under timed conditions, the pressure leads to a loss in marks").

For Year 10 algebra, skipping steps when forming equations hid small sign errors, which took extra time to find.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 maths, forgotten multiplication facts slowed down long division; revision focused only on recent topics meant earlier concepts slipped from memory.

In English (Year 9), arguments lacked focus when writing essays, leaving responses less convincing than intended.

Recent Achievements

A Pyrmont tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously struggled with worded ratio problems now tackling them independently, even adapting quickly when questions were rephrased—a big shift from needing step-by-step prompts.

In a recent session, a Year 8 student who had been hesitant to ask questions started speaking up whenever unsure and volunteered to solve practice sums on the whiteboard without prompting.

Meanwhile, a primary schooler worked through all her mensuration formula problems within the set time for the first time after having trouble finishing before; she finished strong by checking her answers herself and correcting two small errors without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ultimo Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydney Secondary College Blackwattle Bay Campus.
