The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make him/her comfortable and be a like a friend. It is crucial for a tutor to make the students understand that they are free to ask any doubts or questions without being afraid. I am mostly available out of tuition hours as well via text or call. So I will be there if they have any last…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen. Is there a way the student feels they learn better? Perhaps through pictures instead of words? Is the student not focussed and extremely tired? Would it be more productive to learn outside in the backyard or reschedule for another day? Students are young, but they are young adults.…

From my perspective of view, the most important things I can teach a student are the interests in this subject and finding pleasure from it. If that does not work, I will teach students the train of thought when solving different types of questions, summarise the key points and raise efficiency in their learning. I was raised up in another country…

When students feel safe to ask questions and explore ideas, they’re much more likely to build confidence and develop a genuine interest in the subject. In order for the tutoring sessions to be efficient, it is essential that a good relationship be established between the tutor and the student. Often, this relationship is created quickly, but at other times, it may take a few sessions before the student opens up. The success of this relationship reveals the personalities of each of them, but it…

Listen to what the student has to say, and base their teaching strategy around their individual needs. I believe I am very clear and concise with what I teach, and that because of my openly…

Teaching them the curriculum and making them score higher is not alone enough making them realize what they are capable of. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make learning fun or easy. A student studies because he/she is enjoying it or forced because of responsibility or other circumstances. If you can convince the student that they are enjoying what they are learning and it's actually easy, then they will gain a lot of self-confidence…

I think a tutor can inspire the students and teach them the importance of knowledge. I also think the students many a times look up to their teachers as role models. So a tutor should also be a persona that they imitate! And hence it's the duty of the teacher to set a good example in front of their students for them to learn and grow! I can be…

Inside RichmondTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sam worked on reviewing questions missed in Maths Space, with a focus on statistics and interpreting data sets.

For Year 8, Mia covered the foundations of algebra including expanding brackets and factoring, then practiced graphing parabolas using turning point form.

In Year 10, Liam reviewed motion concepts such as velocity and displacement through problem-solving exercises, and tackled chemistry mole calculations to strengthen quantitative analysis skills.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 exam preparation, one student's revision focused mainly on familiar question types, avoiding harder Units 1 and 2 calculation problems. "She got these wrong on the exam, so this will be our next focus."

In a Year 8 algebra session, work was often messy and steps were skipped—making it hard to spot where mistakes happened.

A primary student hesitated to show working in fraction problems out of fear of being wrong; as a tutor noted, "he needs more confidence to go with his gut instinct."

These patterns led to repeated errors and slowed progress in mastering new material.

Recent Achievements

One Richmond tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through questions now takes time to read each one carefully, catching details she previously missed.

In a senior session, another student who had struggled with algebra last term is now confidently recognising like terms and solving equations without prompting—last week, he finished all assigned problems independently for the first time.

A younger student also surprised her tutor by starting to ask clarifying questions during lessons rather than guessing quietly; this shift meant she solved several tricky fraction problems correctly on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Richmond Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bindjiroo Yaluk Community School-Richmond Campus.
