As a tutor, you can\'t approach each student as if they are the same person learning the same subject. Each individual has different weaknesses and strengths. For a tutor to recognise this fact is detrimental to ensuring the tutor can target each student\'s weaknesses effectively instead of wasting time. Having been a student myself, I know time…

In my opinion, a tutor is able to change the perspective of a student towards a particular subject completely. It is true that in the end, it's the student's effort that makes them perform well but on the other hand, a tutor can make the student put in the effort, and make the student enjoy what he is studying. I know that I can get through to…

A tutor should empower students to think independently and build their self-belief. It is also vital to create a safe, respectful environment where learning feels achievable and enjoyable. I am patient, adaptable, and able to explain concepts in different ways to suit how each student learns best. I also build strong rapport, which helps students…

Resilience after drawbacks. A good tutor should not only provide one or two solutions limited to a single issue, but also help students establish confidence and motivation, and achieve their goals through dedicated efforts. Being able to explain contents in various ways and relate concepts to tangible life experiences; being able to put myself on…

I think developing a friendly relationship is one of the most important things a tutor can do. By doing this, students feel more confident and happy to truly engage with their tutor, ask any questions they possibly could have, which I think ultimately leads to better learning. As a one-on-one teaching assistant with more than one year of experience, providing some notes and problem-solving skills to students, and the notes would not be covered by their school. Naturally, a tutor's main priority is to provide profound and thorough knowledge through clear communication. I believe that while this is nuclear to the role, this teaching can only be achieved if the tutor also carries other accompanying qualities. This includes patience and listening, aforementioned, and trust. As a tutor, it is inevitable that…

Andrea, Ringwood East

Inside Ringwood EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Harry focused on multiplying and dividing using times tables grids and practiced finding percentages of numbers, including real-world scenarios like discounts.

In Year 8, Gabriella worked through factorising quadratic equations and practiced graphing quadratics in preparation for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Tom tackled solving linear equations and explored how to sketch lines and calculate gradients across different contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7, one student's algebra work was hard to follow because working steps weren't shown—"writing out the process would have made sign errors easier to spot."

In Year 10, messy layouts and unlabeled diagrams in geometry led to confusion when checking answers.

A Year 11 student skipped homework on exponents, making class review less effective and missing feedback opportunities.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student only revised familiar multiplication facts instead of challenging areas; this slowed their progress with division tasks.

After setbacks, a senior student hesitated to ask clarifying questions, leaving gaps unaddressed before tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Ringwood East noticed a Year 10 student who was previously hesitant with algebra now solving multi-step expressions much faster, finishing their times tables under five minutes for the first time.

In Year 11 English, one student began offering more creative ideas during discussions and even took the initiative to brainstorm themes for their upcoming SAC—something they'd rarely volunteered before.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who used to need lots of guidance worked out nearly all her 8-times-table questions independently this week, only checking in for help when really needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Realm Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Eastwood Primary School.
