I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them confidence and make sure they achieve their personal best, which is extremely integral in the student's journey through schooling and their future. I feel like I am a very patient person as this is a quality that is required for tutoring, my other strengths include my…

There are many facets of tutoring essential to achieve the optimum yet I think the most important element is the one on one quality of tutoring. This enables a student to be provided with specific feedback and assistance of their areas for improvement or difficulties. Understanding the strengths an weaknesses of a student is the most important…

Someone once told me a great teacher is not a messiah but a guide. As a tutor, I do not gift my mentees the treasure of knowledge but rather act as a guide toward achieving them. I believe the most important thing that a tutor can do for their students in the limited time that they have is to show them how to study on their own and succeed even…

A tutor should provide a learning environment where students can build their confidence in academic performance. I believe it is crucial to get students engaged enthusiastically in the subjects and be open to their questions. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be loving. Actually caring for the student's academic success will not only make them more likely to succeed, but it will help them go beyond to reaching a scholarly level. No matter which subject the student is learning, s/he needs to know why s/he needs to learn it. Recently, Diane Tavenner, the innovator of American education encourages students to learn whatever they want by asking them to solve problem by themselves. In the field of applied linguistics, we call it 'boost input by producing output'. I believe…

Attentive listening and keep everything simple: it's deducted from the informal tutor experience that lecturing over hours and hours isn't a good way to help the kids. I tend to ask question like "Did you get it? Was it confusing?" and using simple words to explain the concepts, instead of overwhelming them with a pile of information or technical…

Personally, when I was a student the most important effect of good teachers and tutors was regaining confidence in myself. They showed me that it was okay to fail, how to bounce back, and how to learn from my mistakes. I think the most important things a tutor can do is to build the student's confidence. Sometimes students may feel afraid to make mistakes even though in fact they know more than they think. A tutor should also keep encouraging the students to keep going even when it's tough. I think one of my strengths is being patient. I don't mind explaining…

Inside RockdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sasha worked through measurement questions from her textbook, focusing on calculating area and converting between units; she also completed a worksheet for homework support.

For Year 11, Jay tackled practice quiz problems on networks, rates, and ratios directly aligned with the standard mathematics syllabus.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Ava practiced reading aloud and writing in English before moving on to adding and subtracting fractions as well as being introduced to Roman numerals.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student in Mathematics struggled to retain and apply network theory definitions, as noted: "it was just something that needed drilling—he didn't fully grasp the need for repetition." This led to difficulties when tackling unfamiliar problems, with reliance on prompts rather than independent recall.

In Year 9, one student avoided writing down working in area and perimeter tasks, sometimes erasing attempts instead of leaving a visible trail—making it harder to trace logic or learn from mistakes.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student tended to hyper-focus on irrelevant details during challenging surface area questions, sidestepping the main task and losing confidence mid-way.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Rockdale noticed a high school student who used to quietly follow instructions now catching calculation errors on his own and even pointing them out before the tutor, showing real engagement during rates and ratios work.

Another high schooler, after previously skipping written steps in maths, has begun writing down her working without reminders and even talks through her process out loud—especially useful when tackling algebraic questions she once found tricky.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who struggled with mixed numerals picked up the concept quickly this week and chose to attempt extra practice questions independently before asking for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bayside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary and St Mina's Coptic Orthodox College, Rockdale campus.
