I think enthusiasm is important - I have found in my own studies that when someone isn't enthusiastic about what they are teaching, it can easily dampen one's own ability to take on information. As i mentioned, being patient and encouraging is key to making students feel confident in their learning. Finally, being organised so that when the lesson…

A tutor should be a good listener in order to understand the problem that a student is facing. Identify the student's strengths , their interests and translate into learning. Lastly, as a tutor, it is really important to celebrate successes and failures in order to build growth mindset. I have the ability to break down complex problems into simple…

I find it important for tutors to be able to make a student comfortable to ask them questions and to give wrong answers. The most important way we learn is through seeing our failures and determining what we can do better the next time. Without being able to acknowledge their own mistakes and see how they can do better, students will not be able…

The tutor's first job is converting hard 'textbook language' to easy and illustrative concepts. Next is polishing the student's skills with extensive exercises while making sure he has time for other hobbies. It helps if the tutor is aware of things such as fun interactive quizzes or videos that helps makes concepts seem simpler while also keeping…

From my perspective, a tutor is also a teacher as we teach and deliver knowledge to students. Each student sits at a different level, which requires different tutoring method and approaches. Understanding is key in tutoring as adequate assistance would help a student to achieve their best potentials. Secondly, we as tutoring should make students…

The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

The most important thing that I can do as a tutor would be to make sure the kid understands everything that I teach. Each kid is different. I make sure I tend…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is be supportive. Students are already frustrated when they do not understand something, hence we do not need to add to that by being frustrated at them. In addition, a tutor needs to be flexible. This allows one to better tailor the program to the student's needs and the student's strengths. I…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to be open to criticism and feedback from students. The tutor plays an important role in teaching the student that they care about their academics and them as a person. Some kids feel hopeless in some subjects at school, due to bad grades or teachers that have other students to focus on, and believe that there is no way to improve because of that. Through the one-on-one experience with tutors, the…

I think, the main part is understanding. Tutor should help students in understanding of the concepts and their purpose. Secondly, tutor should be understanding, so that he/she serves students according to their needs as different students have different ways of visualising things. Thirdly, tutor should help in planning of the subject so that…

As a tutor, I think it is very important to make sure that a student does not lose hope. Even in moments of distress, it is my responsibility that the student does not lose confidence in his abilities. Losing confidence or hope is the worst thing that can happen before an exam. Inside Rodd PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lachlan focused on introductory algebra, working through a custom booklet and practicing foundational equation-solving.

In Year 10, Sophie revised financial mathematics—including error in measurement—by tackling last-minute practice questions she selected ahead of an exam.

For Year 11, Alex concentrated on curve sketching with the derivative and worked through global maximum and minimum problems to strengthen understanding for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student missed revision work from Term 1 and, as a tutor noted, "has not done any work on this revision on his own," limiting his readiness for upcoming exams.

In Year 12 Standard Maths, another student failed to mention an assignment until after completion—missing the chance for targeted support.

Messy working was evident with one Year 10: "crams working onto one page," making errors harder to spot and fix.

Several senior students repeatedly forgot key formulae or relied too heavily on memorisation rather than understanding, especially in trigonometry and algebra; one admitted, "I don't use the formula sheet much."

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Rodd Point recently noticed a big shift in one Year 11 student, who started asking for help and clarifying questions about trig rather than just memorising steps—something he used to avoid.

In Year 10, another student began tackling algebra homework independently before sessions, showing initiative that hadn't been there last term.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 6 finally managed to complete all their calculation-based problems without needing hints after previously hesitating on worded maths questions.

Last week, one high schooler finished an entire practice test within the time limit and got nearly every answer correct.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Five Dock Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dobroyd Point Public School.
