In my view, the paramount role of a tutor is to cultivate a learning environment filled with patience and empathy. By recognising the challenges students may encounter along their learning journey and demonstrating empathy towards these obstacles, a positive and supportive environment is created between the student and tutor. This allows me to…

I believe that one of the most fundamental tenets of education is the ability to recognise the different support systems and forms of motivation students require to excel both academically and holistically and thus catering lessons to best suit those needs. Additionally, creating an environment in which students can express their concerns and…

Build a trusting relationship with them that makes them feel comfortable asking questions, as the large classroom environment sometimes intimidates kids and makes them feel like a question they want to ask is 'dumb' because everyone else seems fine with the concept (even though they usually aren't). I'm very patient with people who may be…

As a tutor, I believe in catering to the students needs. Different students have different learning styles, so it is important to adapt my teaching styles to the individual. I also think compassion and understanding are necessary traits for tutors. Every student learns at different paces, and can grasp certain topics quicker than others. Patience…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is analyzing them and figuring out their strengths and aspects where they need support the most. By doing so, the tutor can help the student find their potential and reach great heights - both academically and otherwise.. I have always been told that I am good at explaining things,…

I think the most important things a tutor can do is to provide academic guidance, human connection, and motivation and drive interest of the student towards the subject. The combination of these factors can potentially reinvent a class, subject, or school more broadly for a young learner. Creativity and enthusiasm for teaching. Ability to explain…

A tutor has to understand about what kind of learner his/her student is. As the student could be visual learner, a kinesthetic learner, or just an auditory learner, the teacher has to use appropriate teaching methods. I can explain concepts clearly. I can provide numerous real-world examples so that each of the students have understood the…

First of all to establish good communication, so they feel comfortable and suit you. Next, is to understand the strength and the weakness of the student so you can know which thing to focus one. Always have to encourage them to be confident so they can strive for the better. I find my strength is being constantly positive to build up the…

It is of utter importance that the tutor provisions the required environment for the student to be comfortable. Also, the tutor should consider the circumstances of the student and act accordingly. Furthermore, the tutor must motivate the student to move forward in the subject by increasing the student's confidence in him/herself. The latter can…

Empathy! Having a tutor that struggles (hopefully not anymore) with a subject definitely helps because they are able to understand what you are doing through and are less likely to get frustrated that you cannot grasp a concept, no matter how "simple" it may be. I'm wonderful at communication, I'm patient/do not get frustrated easily, and I am…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do is give a student confidence in themselves. It is not the tutor's job to simply pass on their own knowledge, but rather to show the student that they had the ability to excel on their own all along. Tutors can do this by explaining concepts in a new way or more slowly than they may have been…

I think a good tutor is supposed to firmly believe that every child can achieve success in each subject regardless of any individual difficulties even with special needs. The most important thing a tutor can do is build confidence as well as knowledge. When students believe in themselves, they naturally try harder and keep improving. Inside Rodd PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lachlan focused on introductory algebra, working through a custom booklet and practicing foundational equation-solving.

In Year 10, Sophie revised financial mathematics—including error in measurement—by tackling last-minute practice questions she selected ahead of an exam.

For Year 11, Alex concentrated on curve sketching with the derivative and worked through global maximum and minimum problems to strengthen understanding for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student missed revision work from Term 1 and, as a tutor noted, "has not done any work on this revision on his own," limiting his readiness for upcoming exams.

In Year 12 Standard Maths, another student failed to mention an assignment until after completion—missing the chance for targeted support.

Messy working was evident with one Year 10: "crams working onto one page," making errors harder to spot and fix.

Several senior students repeatedly forgot key formulae or relied too heavily on memorisation rather than understanding, especially in trigonometry and algebra; one admitted, "I don't use the formula sheet much."

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Rodd Point recently noticed a big shift in one Year 11 student, who started asking for help and clarifying questions about trig rather than just memorising steps—something he used to avoid.

In Year 10, another student began tackling algebra homework independently before sessions, showing initiative that hadn't been there last term.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 6 finally managed to complete all their calculation-based problems without needing hints after previously hesitating on worded maths questions.

Last week, one high schooler finished an entire practice test within the time limit and got nearly every answer correct.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Five Dock Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dobroyd Point Public School.
