The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to lay a right foundation for the student to learn. Teaching them not to memorise formulae but to actually understand the theory behind the formula as higher levels of maths rely on prior knowledge that needs to be firmly understood. My strengths lie within my experience and personality. I…

The most important thing a tutor can or should do for a student is to change the students perspective towards their subjects in a more positive way, including changing their approaches towards the problematic questions and their end goal of the subjects (from to pass to master the subject). I am patient, supportive and confident to say that I can…

Build Confidence: Often, a student's struggle with math is more about a fear of failure than an inability to learn. The first job of a tutor is to create a positive, stress-free environment and show the student that they are capable. This shift in mindset is the foundation for all progress. My strong performance in my engineering Diploma at UTS…

A tutor can guide a student to succeed. Not only in studies, but life in general. If tutors can make students aware of certain things which changes how they operate and that is the greatest thing a tutor can do. I am very patient and understanding. Creating a safe and comfortable learning environment for a student is one important aspect of effective tutoring. The private setting is what sets apart tutoring and classroom learning. So much of learning is based on relationships, communication styles, understanding a student's background and their academic, social, and emotional growths which…

Tutoring is very different to a typical classroom setting. Each class is unique and solely focused on the one student. This one-to-one learning experience is something many students wouldn’t normally get in a classroom. Naturally, they’ll be able to ask as many questions as they want. As a result, you’ll feel you’re making a real…

I think as a tutor, most important thing is to helping them developing their study patterns so they can utilise it when they are graduated from high school. The most important thing a tutor can do is communicate with the student. Sometimes the student may feel shy or scared to ask a question that they might feel is common sense. I find it important for tutors to be able to make a student comfortable to ask them questions and to give wrong answers. The most important way we learn is through seeing our failures and determining what we can do better the next time. Without being able to acknowledge their own mistakes and see how they can do better, students will not be able…

Inside RookwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Ella worked through exam questions and homework on indices, scientific notation, and significant figures, focusing on applying rules to simplify expressions and convert between forms.

Another Year 9 student, Alex, completed a topic test on indices and scientific notation and was assigned worksheets covering algebra, area and perimeter, as well as volume and surface area for extra practice over the break.

For Year 4, Mia reviewed probability using Venn diagrams along with geometry concepts, while also revising addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through targeted worksheets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student working on algebra and angles often avoided showing full working, especially when rearranging equations—she jumped straight to the answer, which hid calculation slips with negatives.

In Year 10 financial mathematics, one student leaned heavily on calculator statistics mode but struggled when asked to find quartiles manually or check results without digital aids.

For a Year 4 learner practicing division, incomplete memorization of times tables meant repeated hesitations and disrupted progress in multi-step problems.

Across these sessions, skipping careful layout or relying on shortcuts led to confusion during more complex revision tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Rookwood recently noticed a Year 8 student who used to avoid multiplication is now confidently reciting both the 10 and 11 times tables from memory, even volunteering to try harder questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who previously struggled with financial mathematics managed to solve straight-line and declining-balance depreciation problems independently after initially needing step-by-step guidance.

In another session, a Year 12 student who was hesitant about networks worked through minimum spanning tree and maximum-flow/minimum-cut theorem questions unaided, choosing the right approach for each scenario on their own initiative.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lidcombe Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Homebush West Public School.
