I believe that tutoring will help a student have an increased sense of confidence in themselves when practising their maths. Additionally, tutoring enables students to have a deeper understanding of the math topics which they are struggling with. I believe I have multiple strengths which makes me a successful tutor. I am able to communicate…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is give them the confidence to tackle questions by themselves. This is done by not doing the questions for the students, rather assisting their attempt at the questions, giving insight into what your approach would look like. My strengths as a tutor include: my ability to take an…

Teach the student how to learn. Each student has the capability to learn the HSC curriculum at a high level but does not know how to approach it effectively. If I can indirectly teach the student how to properly approach mathematics while teaching him/her the questions, then I have succeeded. 1. Understanding the way the student has thought…

Firstly, as a former student I believe the most important thing a maths tutor can do is inspire and guide a student to learn on their own - as easy as it is to simply give away answers, actually getting someone to really put in a bit more effort is the challenging (and more rewarding) part. After that it just comes down to being able to connect…

I believe that the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to guide them to understand concepts instead of giving them formulae to memorize or solutions to copy. By helping a student realize their own potential to solve problems by honing their strengths and finding methods that work for them, it gives a student confidence in…

Give them the skills and opportunity to do the best that they possibly can. I am very relatable to other students as I wasn't the smartest person in my classes. I find that because of this, its easier for the people I'm tutoring to relate to me and I think that encourages them to learn…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to teach that student the necessary tools for them to take responsibility of their own learning. It is absolutely my belief that students are able to successfully answer questions they deem "too hard" if only they consider the elements of the difficult question in more depth. This is…

I think a good tutor needs to first and foremost be able to understand the level of their student in order to help them improve. I also think that being able to re-explain mathematical theories and concepts in alternative ways is essential in helping students to fully comprehend the subject. I feel patience is key, but a good tutor also needs to…

A tutors primary role is to ensure the students understands the content. In my experience this is not as simple as it sounds, as many students are taught how to answer questions rather then being taught mathematics; abstracting difficult concepts into simpler forms, through the use of analogies and other explanatory methods is key in allowing a…

Inside Rose BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Lukas focused on finding the equation of a line, including determining gradients and y-intercepts, and practiced sketching parabolas by identifying turning points and intercepts.

Year 10 student tackled simultaneous equations as well as factorising quadratics using grouping and difference of squares strategies, working through targeted textbook problems.

For a primary school student in Year 4, recent sessions concentrated on fractions—covering addition, subtraction, multiplication and division—and converting between decimals and fractions with practical examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, a student arrived unprepared for lessons and often forgot required materials, leading to missed opportunities for feedback on financial math practice. As one tutor observed, "he did not bring the past papers that I had previously given him."

Another Year 10 student showed signs of frustration when unsure how to approach multi-step worded problems—this led to avoidance of more challenging revision tasks and repeated confusion over which methods to use.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner's tendency to count out times tables instead of recalling them from memory slowed progress in fraction conversions, especially during timed activities.

Recent Achievements

One Rose Bay tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with trig problems now confidently writes out all his working for each question, even tackling non-right angled triangles on his own.

Another high schooler made a clear shift by arriving with all homework finished and identifying where he needed extra help, leading him to solve simultaneous equations independently after some guided practice.

In Year 5, a student who previously mixed up the order of months can now recite them without hesitation and completed multi-digit subtraction questions accurately in one sitting.
