The fundamental role of a maths tutor lies in empowering students. The tutor guides them throughout, but students need to feel a sense of ownership over their own progress. I firmly believe that simply providing answers and explanations right away does not serve the student’s best interests. Allowing the student to hold the pen, metaphorically…

Encourage the student. Don't do their homework for them. Let them do their own homework questions. In mathematics showing that a student understands the steps to work out the problem is just as important as getting the correct answers. At university level marks are given for the setting out of problems. patience - though I need a paying job, I…

It's essential to not only teach how to solve problems, but to teach a student how they are able to learn by themselves. This will ensure a bright future for students. Also, I encourage students to seek help when they need it. Some problems cannot be solved on your own. I like to connect with students on their level. I enjoy solving problems so I…

The most important things a maths tutor can do for a student are to instill confidence and inspire a student's curiosity for the subject. This comes from clear explanations in class, well-prepared lessons and patience from a tutor so that students can learn and gain confidence in a subject at their own pace. My strengths as a tutor lie in my…

Be there for the student and not dismiss any question from the student as a not-so-good question. That demotivates the student. Every question is an important and a good question. I'm a very patient person. I can keep explaining a topic repeatedly if necessary to explain it to the student. And my biggest strength will be that I genuinely love…

While obviously a maths tutor is paid to help a student improve their grades or help them study, a tutor that is able to give a student an actual interest in the subject matter is one of the best things a tutor can do. Giving a student an interest in the subject will make them improve their grades even by thereself as they will enjoy studying and…

I believe that tutoring should not be a formulaic job. Essentially, what that means is that different people have different ways of learning and I think it's important for tutors to be able to adapt to how a student approaches a particular topic instead of standardizing knowledge. My main strengths are that I am very good with people of all ages…

Relatability is so important. We see a huge disconnect between teachers/tutors and students. I believe that an equal playing field with mutual respect creates a unique learning environment and nurtures encouragement. The student can see how the teacher got to where they are, and can realise that they, too, can learn these concepts just as those…

I believe that it is important for a maths tutor to be so much more than what a teacher is. It is also extremely important for the tutor to always have a positive attitude and encourage…

Inside Rushcutters BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Taiki focused on reading comprehension by tackling a story called 'The Dragon,' practising phonics for unfamiliar words, and then writing sentences using new vocabulary.

In Year 9, Maddison worked through trigonometry problems including finding angles and sides in right-angled triangles as well as bearings, using both classwork and extension exercises.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia concentrated on factorising quadratic expressions and reviewed key concepts in perimeter and area during maths homework support.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student showed ongoing reluctance to write out working for maths problems, especially with decimals and fractions—he tried to solve everything in his head, which led to missed steps and confusion when reviewing answers.

In Year 11, messy or incomplete pen-and-paper notes during algebraic manipulation made it difficult to track errors or revise later.

Another senior student preparing for exams struggled with organizing her revision, sometimes relying on formula recall without consistently checking each step; this resulted in simple but costly mistakes on quizzes.

For a Year 3 learner, avoiding reading comprehension tasks too quickly meant missing key points, affecting confidence after setbacks.

Recent Achievements

One Rushcutters Bay tutor noticed that a Year 10 student, previously hesitant to tackle unfamiliar maths problems, now brings forward her own questions from class and has just scored 98% on her latest assignment after independently organising data into stem and leaf plots.

A high schooler who used to quietly struggle with bearings and probability recently took the initiative to jot down specific topics she wanted help with before the lesson, then worked through those sections confidently.

Meanwhile, a younger student has shifted from skipping tricky division questions to asking for step-by-step explanations until he can solve them accurately himself.

Pat is an excellent tutor. Daphne enjoying learning Maths again. Looking forward to seeing the results in her tests at school.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydney Grammar School - Edgecliff Preparatory School.
