I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen. I believe listening is very important since if you don't listen to your student, or get them to explain concepts for themselves, you won't be able to deduce which areas to focus on. One of my weaknesses as a tutor would have to be that if my student is having difficulty,…

Helping students understand that they are capable of overcoming their difficulties with the subject. Helping them to identify what they need to improve in order to perform better. Teaching them that their efforts are worth it and that they can achieve their goals if they work hard. Many students give up before trying, so I think this is the first…

Adjusting their teaching style to suit the way that student learns. Sometimes, explaining the content for a long time will work, but most of the time it doesn't. Including the student in the lesson is very important. I used tutoring in highschool, so I have a good idea of how to frame my lessons and adjust…

Support their learning without giving away the answers easily so that the student can actually practice while supervised. This not only and proves their understanding, but also allows them to go through all of the processes in problem solving so that they form their own framework to comprehend the subject matter. It is important to do this while…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to inspire, guide and listen. I strongly believe all students learn differently and have their own unique study methods, therefore it is important for a tutor to adjust to the student's needs and personalise the study session. However, I also consider it useful that tutors help develop new study habits and introduce new ways to learn whilst tutoring in a way that the student…

Tutors should be able to convey information in a way that not only makes sense, but engages the student. A tutor should be as eager about the subject they are teaching as they are knowledgeable of the topic, and should strive to convey this excitement and passion through their teaching. The ability to help a student not only understand, but love…

The best thing a tutor can do for a student is to be there to support them in their wins and losses. They need to be available to answer their questions, no matter how silly. Mansi was prompt and polite with me. Genevieve was positive about the lesson and Mansi drew out where her weaknesses were and was patient and encouraging and kept Genevieve on track. Mansi has a great way of communicating and didn't talk down to or make Genevieve feel bad for not knowing the answer and explained the answer a few times, and in different ways.

Inside SandgateTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Bella worked on mental maths strategies and tackled introductory algebra problems.

In Year 10, Georgia focused on developing her creative writing for an assessment and also prepared for upcoming Shakespeare tasks.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Katie explored electromagnetic induction concepts and practiced applying formulas related to electric fields and solenoids.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often hesitated to write down working in algebra, making it harder to spot calculation slips—"when reminded to show steps, she quickly found where she'd gone wrong."

In a senior Physics session, one student arrived without a charged laptop and incomplete experiment data, delaying assessment progress.

A Year 10 student was distracted by upcoming assessments and didn't finish the draft required for their assignment.

Another Year 7 student sometimes lost motivation when multiplication became challenging, which led to unfinished questions and shaky confidence during class discussions.

In each case, small process gaps had ripple effects on learning flow.

Recent Achievements

A Sandgate tutor recently saw a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to speak up now actively asking questions and reasoning through solutions on her own, especially in algebra sessions.

Another high schooler, after struggling with ratios, now remembers calculation steps without prompts and can apply them across new problems.

In Year 5 maths, a student who often lost focus when sick managed to concentrate for most of the session and independently solved mixed fraction addition and subtraction—something she found overwhelming just weeks ago.

One session ended with the student choosing a tougher problem herself rather than waiting for direction.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thank you for your email received today. I am very pleased to report that we are very impressed with Minh and his approach to tutoring our son. Minh is a very responsible and passionate teacher, we feel his enthusiasm will promote Elijah-Taye to the required level in a reasonable time frame.

Thank you for your follow up.  Ty is progressing well and we are all happy with the way things are going (mum, dad and Ty).  Apart from the normal issues, that sometimes he just 'doesn't feel like it' at the beginning of the session, he enjoys the tutoring and is gaining benefits already.  Though Ty has always had quite a good understanding of Maths, the idea of tutoring was to keep him at his best.  He was complaining of not understanding his teacher this year, so the different ways of thinking and and ways of teaching are definitely helping. I am happy with Sheetal and his dedication to his tutoring, even ringing Ty to check his progress before an assessment.  This is not something that I was expecting, but is a welcome addition as I see it helping Ty keep focused as well.

Thanks for the email. We are very happy with Lisa. She is bright and keen and has established a very easy rapport with Xiao. Xiao actually really likes her. We feel very confident that Xiao will continue to make progress with her maths.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sandgate Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sandgate State School.
