First and foremost, I would argue that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide motivation and encouragement; cultivating the student's desire to learn and succeed. If this is achieved, academic success simply becomes a by-product. Secondly, a tutor must act as a resource that complements learning within a school…

Foremost, a tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far, incorporating a good…

In my personal opinion and experience, having an informal connection with the student alongside being their tutor is extremely beneficial as they are able to clearly and more freely express their opinions related to studies and also helps the tutor in gaining insight into their learning styles. As a tutor, I utilize my leadership and communication…

A tutor can always assist a student to help understand all of their basic structural and systematic questions and problems. Also a tutor's guidance should inspire the student to work with dedication. I like to address the doubts of students and solve them immediately. I also frequently ask them if they've got any further questions and I keep…

I should be able to make learning fun for the student and make the student feel more confident while dealing with the subject. The student might slowly develop liking for the subject if they find it easy and interesting. The most important task that should be done is that the concept is clear for the student such that they don't ever feel the…

Explaining the concepts clearly and easily along with appropriate examples are the must for a tutor. But, more importantly, a tutor should help students cultivate good habits like hard work, discipline, confidence, time management etc. By doing so, a student not only grows academically but also personally. And this can help them in the future. I…

I believe critical thinking is the most important skill that a tutor can bring to a student, since I think the responsibility of a tutor is to lead and motivate a student to complete their school tasks by themselves, rather than depending on help from a tutor. A tutor should also provide adequate solutions for different students. As I believe…

My strengths as a tutor are as…

In my opinion, the role of a tutor goes beyond simply imparting knowledge. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to inspire confidence, make them love learning, and equip them with the tools to thrive independently. A tutor should always analyse the strengths and weaknesses of their students. This will provide a detailed insight to the tutors on which areas to particularly focus on. Furthermore, based on the strengths and weaknesses of each student, a tutor can prepare a routine for the students in order to enhance their knowledge in those subjects where the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is hone their abilities in such a way that they not only are able to succeed during the time of your employment but also be able to use the skills you teach them in future as well. Being a good tutor requires you to be a good listener. Without listening to problems that students may experience, the time spent for both the student and the tutor will be wasted. I take pride in my ability to allow students to communicate any struggles that they may have before starting. In addition, being engaging while teaching ensures that…

Local Reviews

Easy to organise and great tutor!
Julie, Sandringham

Inside SandringhamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Ben practised solving integer equations and converting fractions to decimals, using worked examples for clarity.

Year 10, Maya reviewed the application of differentiation principles to kinematics, focusing on velocity versus speed and using the chain rule.

For Year 11, Tom worked through linear equations with CAS technology and started reviewing simple and compound interest calculations in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

Across several year levels, incomplete homework and organization have limited progress: one Year 8 student "didn't remember much in terms of LCM and HCF from last week," with homework left unfinished.

In Years 9–10, written work was sometimes messy or unclear—setting out in algebra and fraction tasks was flagged as needing improvement.

A Year 11 student used the CAS calculator for even simple sums rather than practicing manual computation, making it harder to spot errors or build confidence.

During a recent test, a senior student's stress led to forgotten methods and difficulty recalling processes under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Sandringham noticed a big shift with one Year 10 student who, after struggling to write out her working, now uses a step-by-step "talk aloud" strategy and completes practice tests much more neatly.

In Year 12 maths, another student recently scored 81% on a tech-free SAC and is getting better at checking the wording of each question to avoid losing marks for careless mistakes—something that had tripped him up before.

Meanwhile, a primary student who found analogue time confusing can now confidently read times past the hour without needing reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sandringham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Firbank Grammar School - Sandringham Campus.
